Not only has Disney/Marvel's Avengers: Endgame come out on top of the weekend box office race, but it broke more than a dozen box office records while doing so.

The final chapter in the Avengers saga blew past the previous weekend record of $257.7 million which was set by its predecessor Avengers: Infinity War to finish with an estimated $350 million in domestic ticket sales. When all overseas receipts are added up the film is expected to be around $1.2 billion.

Here are some of the other records set by the superhero tentpole: Biggest worldwide opening; fastest to reach $1 billion worldwide; top North American opening; top daily totals; top China opening; biggest international opening; highest opening weekend in 44 markets; biggest domestic weekend total; top market share; Imax record; biggest 3D sale; widest North American release

The success of Endgame had a somewhat unexpected offshoot effect by boosting another Marvel entry. The female-led Captain Marvel saw a considerable uptick in ticket sales which bumped the pic from the fourth place slot last week to number two this week. That film pulled in an additional $8 million to bring its eight week total to $413 million. {googleads}

Last week's number one film The Curse of La Llorona dropped two slots to finish in third place with a $7.5 million take while the Christian drama film Breakthrough brought in $6.3 million to finish in fourth.

The top five were rounded out by DC's Shazam! which managed another $5.5 million at this weekend's box office.

The Regina Hall-led fantasy/comedy film called Little continued to perform well with a $3.4 million take in the sixth slot while the Disney's live-action Dumbo remake was close behind with $3.2 million

Paramount's Stephen King remake Pet Sematary dropped one slot to come in eighth place by bringing in just over $1.2 million, followed by Jordan Peele's horror film Us which added another $1.1 million to its $172 million domestic total.

The top ten were rounded out by the Disneynature film Penguins which moved up two slots from last week with slightly more than $1 million in its second week.
