
There’s a point in Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die where Sam Rockwell, playing a man from the future who has taken hostages in a LA diner, looks like he’s survived three apocalypses, two divorces, a gas station knife fight, and maybe an edible that kicked in at the wrong time, and somehow that becomes the exact frequency this movie operates on.
This science fiction action/comedy hybrid absolutely works.
Gore Verbinski directs the whole thing like he’s been locked in a bunker since The Lone Ranger flopped and emerged screaming about AI, smartphones, doomed humanity, and sticky diner floors. The movie moves with the energy of somebody shaking a snow globe full of Red Bull, cigarette ash, and old Terminator 2 DVDs. It’s messy. Glorious sometimes. Completely unhinged other times. I kinda loved that it refused to calm the hell down.
Rockwell doesn’t so much “play” a man from the future as he ricochets through scenes like a raccoon trapped in an air duct. He absolutely is that man. And the manic energy works as the rest of the cast get thrown into his predicament. Haley Lu Richardson directly into the center of the madness with this perfectly frayed “normal person trapped in a collapsing simulation” energy while Juno Temple drifts through the movie like she wandered out of a sad dream and accidentally landed inside a techno-apocalypse. Michael Peña spends most of the film looking spiritually exhausted by humanity itself, which somehow becomes one of the funniest recurring bits, and Zazie Beetz plays every scene like she’s one bad notification away from setting the internet on fire personally. The chemistry between them is weirdly perfect because nobody reacts to the insanity the same way — panic, disbelief, dead-eyed acceptance, emotional collapse — yet the movie thrives on that imbalance.
There’s a giant cat at one point. I’m not explaining that. The movie barely explains it either.
Verbinski shoots Los Angeles like civilization already lost and nobody’s updated the group chat yet. Every frame feels sweaty, paranoid, overstimulated. One minute you’re laughing at some lunatic rant about algorithms and digital slavery, next minute the film hits you with this surprisingly sad little observation about people choosing artificial comfort over actual human connection. Then immediately — BAM — pig masks, explosions, screaming, somebody crashing through glass, Geoff Zanelli’s score pounding like the world’s angriest pinball machine. This thing genuinely feels like it was assembled during a 72-hour panic attack. I mean that affectionately.
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die - written by Matthew Robinson - showcases the wild side of Verbinski. It’s as if he came back from Disney with ketchup on his shirt and static electricity in his eyes, and somehow made one of the strangest studio movies in years.

Universal’s 4K presentation of absolutely leans into the film’s sweaty neon nightmare aesthetic instead of trying to clean it up into something artificial and glossy. Detail is razor-sharp throughout — grime-covered alleyways, flickering screens, cracked concrete, every exhausted pore on Sam Rockwell’s permanently stressed-out face — while Dolby Vision gives the movie’s radioactive color palette room to explode without crushing black levels.
Blues stab through the frame, reds pulse like warning lights, and the chaotic nighttime photography finally breathes the way it’s supposed to. Grain remains intact, thankfully, preserving the rough, unstable texture Gore Verbinski clearly wanted instead of scrubbing everything into waxy digital mush. HDR especially shines during the film’s glitch-heavy tech sequences and rain-soaked cityscapes, where reflections, neon signage, and bursts of light feel almost aggressively alive.
It’s a presentation that embraces the movie’s manic visual personality rather than sanding down its edges, and the result is a transfer that looks gloriously unhinged on a large screen.
AUDIO
The Dolby Atmos track on is pure controlled chaos in the best way possible, turning the movie into a full-room sensory overload experience. Dialogue stays surprisingly clean even when scenes descend into screaming matches, collapsing machinery, alarms, explosions, and overlapping digital noise, while the overhead channels constantly flood the soundstage with drones, surveillance chatter, pounding rain, and glitch effects that make the entire mix feel unstable on purpose.
Low-end response hits hard throughout the action scenes, giving every impact, engine rumble, and electronic pulse real weight without turning muddy. Gore Verbinski has always loved aggressive, layered sound design, and this mix fully commits to that philosophy — subtle ambient details creep through quieter moments before the soundtrack suddenly detonates into walls of mechanical noise and distorted music cues.
The score slams through the speakers with enormous presence, surround activity is constant without becoming distracting, and the Atmos presentation captures the film’s anxious, collapsing-world energy perfectly. It’s the kind of track that keeps your speakers working overtime for two straight hours.
