Despite finishing number 1 and 2 respectively, this wasn't the best weekend for sequels at the box office as Illuminations's The Secret Life of Pets 2 and Disney's Dark Phoenix both failed to match expectations.

In fact, The Secret Life of Pets 2 failed to even deliver half of what the first film brought in back in 2016 and Dark Phoenix came into the weekend as the worst reviewed film in the X-Men franchise and, not surprisingly, delivered the lowest opening weekend of the franchise as well. The Secret Life of Pets 2 clocked in with a $47.1 million total while Dark Phoenix finished with $33 million in the bank.

Holdover Aladdin, Disney's live-action remake of the classic genie tale, dropped a spot to finish at number three with a $24.5 million total which brings its two-week haul to over $232 million while Warner's Godzilla: King of the Monsters fell from the top perch to come in fourth with just over $15 million. The latest in the Godzilla franchise has now taken in nearly $79 million in two weeks. {googleads}

Rounding out the top five was Paramount's Elton John biopic Rocketman which continues to perform well with a $14 million take, bringing in over $50 million in in just two weeks.

The psychological horror film Ma, starring Octavia Spencer dropped a couple of slots to sixth place with a $7.8 million take which was enough to top John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum in seventh with a $7.4 million total.

Stalwart Avengers: Endgame continues to hold strong in eighth place with $4.8 million over the weekend which bested number nine Pokemon Detective Pikachu and its five-week total of over $137 million with nearly $3 million brought in over the weekend.

Rounding out the top ten was the teen coming-of-age comedy Booksmart which added $1.5 million to bring its three-week total to nearly $18 million.
