The Barn (2016) - Blu-ray Review

5 beersHoly Helloween, Kiddies.  The Barn is, as the “Peanuts” gang used to say, all sorts of “tricks or treats” and it is now on Blu-ray!  Thankfully, Helen’s Valley lives to see another Halloween.   Great, now let’s make some pumpkin pie!

Beginning in the early 1950s, we see that, yes, the local children were warned.  They were brought into The Old Wheary Falls Church and told the rules of the Harvest Hootenany.  The Wheary Farms property is off limits for trick or treaters, they are explicitly told.  Stay the fuck away.  But, beneath a harvest moon, two kids do the exact opposite of what they should….

…and those sheet-wearing brats get exactly what they deserve for not listening in the first place.  It’s harsh; it’s severe; and, for one, it’s pretty damn painful.  In that way, the doors of The Barn have been opened.  Grab the Walkman, buddy.  We’re gonna need it.

Let’s pause here.  If the first 90 seconds of this motherfucking MAD movie, complete with the original synth-meet-metal music by Rock Gray, doesn’t blow your mind with its retro goodness than you can just get the hell out.  Full of arcades, skating rinks, and tree-lined neighborhoods, The Barn is where all the Horror Hounds want to hang out.

Now, fast-forward to the 1980s.  That’s where the real tale inside The Barn begins.  Downgraded to look like it was filmed three decades ago, this film roars across the screen with a good-natured appreciation for all things wrapped by a jean jacket, ripped sweaters, and leggings.  The Barn is now a staple in my house on Halloween night.  That’s right; a goddamn staple thanks to its rich B-movie vibe and tribute to all things neon and horror-filled.

We get drive-ins, metal music, and some bodacious tatas thanks to the shenanigans of three demons and six teens – played by Mitchell Musolino, Will Stout, Lexi Dripps, Cortland Woodard, Nikki Howell, and Nickolaus Joshua – as they, on Halloween night, knock three times upon the barn door of Wheary Farms, unleash Hell itself, and wind up murdering their way through the night in order to save the day.  The Boogeyman, Hallowed Jack, and the Candycorn Scarecrow are ready to ROCK.

And these three demons answer the call with steely precision; swinging and hacking their way into the sticky icky halls of legend without slipping on the human gunk left on the floor.  Written, directed, and edited by Justin M. Seaman, The Barn is a gory celebration of all things rocking and schlocking.  And the final massacre scene is a face-frying grad time of gore, entrails, and eye-popping hysterics.

Produced and distributed by Nevermore Production Films, The Barn is definitely not for the faint of heart.  People are dismembered, parts are eaten, and only virgins are spared…for a bit.  Oh, yes, there will be blood.  With strong practical effects leading the way in this horror comedy, The Barn gets two big thumbs up from this guy.  Maybe it could use a trim here and a tuck there, but the impression left upon the viewer weighs more than any criticism I might offer could.

With early cameos from B-Movie Scream Queen Linnea Quigley, Ari Lehman (Friday the 13th), and Flesheter’s Rik Billock, The Barn offers more than a tribute to another era; its story is fully loaded – giving a backstory to our three killers and the featured teens in the movie – and damn creative.

The Barn has opened its doors.  Chop until you drop!
