Eighteen annual conventions later, the championed crew of the NSEA Protector reunite for their greatest and realest adventure yet!
Lampooning Star Trek and its loyal fanbase involves applying a delicate touch. Being damn successful at it and ALSO creating a fun experience for those outside of the convention phenomenon is beyond expected when it comes to Science Fiction and comedy, yet that’s exactly what Galaxy Quest does.
The cult comedy is now celebrating its 20th anniversary with Paramount’s SteelBook release of the flick. Directed by Dean Parisot (Home Fries) and written by David Howard and Robert Gordon, Galaxy Quest may start out completely grounded as the fabled crew of the NSEA Protector - Commander Peter Quincy Taggart (Tim Allen), Lt. Tawny Madison (Sigourney Weaver), Dr. Lazarus (Alan Rickman), Tech Sergeant Chen ( Tony Shalhoub), and Lt. Loredo (Daryl Mitchell) - struggle to get along in the green room before their convention appearance, but things lift off quickly as they collection of has-beens and never-weres are called to action by REAL aliens who, yeah, grew up on the reruns of their cancelled show. {googleads}
This crew of actors might have only been on the air for a few short years, but their tales live on in syndication. They have legions of loyal fans who have been celebrating this cult show for nearly twenty years. Yet, this year, there’s a different element to their freaky fans: real aliens. That’s right, fitting right in with the rest of the costumed fans at the convention, a group of aliens enter the convention center and, after a comedic series of mishaps, convince the actors to become their characters and help the Thermians deal with a race of reptilians who wish to blow them away.
They might be clueless. They might not have direction. But they definitely have to turn in their greatest performances in order to survive this interstellar comedy. Co-starring Sam Rockwell, Justin Long, Missi Pyle, and Rainn Wilson, Galaxy Quest is often brilliant in its tip of the hat to Star Trek AND its fans. No person who identifies as a Trekker or a Trekkie should pass up the opportunity to see this fun flick because, lo and behold, it might be the crew who are beamed back into action but it is their fans that wind up saving the day.
Boldly go where no actor has gone before and join the crew of the NSEA Protector as they go toe-to-toe with some pretty freaky aliens. The SteelBook release of Galaxy Quest is yet another reason to “Never give up. Never surrender.”

Paramount has literally done nothing with this transfer. The art is new and the SteelBook is new, too. Unfortunately, there is no new HD transfer, so the same disc and specs are included here.
Video:
The AVC MPEG-4 1080p offering is pretty solid. Colors pop off the screen in brilliant crisp arrays from start to finish. Blacks, being in the universe, are a constant presence and are rich and inky, and perhaps a little crush seeps in, robbing some detail but it isn’t to a detrimental level. Skin tones, when we’re talking aliens galore, can’t be referred to as natural, but they are detailed, with the heavy make-ups holding their own in HD.
Audio:
Sound is a powerful DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix that is beyond aggressive with immersive effects. Dialogue is crisp, centred and perfectly blended amongst sound chaos that will make your speakers sweat. This is reference quality sound, and a disc very useful in showing off your home cinema.
