With her decision made, there can be only one force that flings open the double doors that lead to one character’s fate. And she will walk down the long haul with the balls of her feet digging into the ground with intention. Everyone thinks she’s mad anyway. The taking of her own life will be no real shock.
This is the tragic case that is at the center of Dominique, a thriller that now finds its way onto blu-ray thanks to Vinegar Syndrome’s stunning new transfer.
Screaming in the silence. That’s the best way to describe this tense and atmospheric thriller as one bastard of a husband (Cliff Robertson) absolutely drives his wife (Jean Simmons) to kill herself. But, truly, there is so much more to this supernatural tale of ghosts and illusions. Dominique is dead after all. I mean, isn’t she?
The suspense happens soon enough. Dominique is being accused of all sorts of things at the onset of the movie. From stealing a brooch to dismissing her driver after a late night party, Dominque, appearing all sorts of timid and English, is having a rough go at it. She sees one thing and the people around her, especially her doubting husband, see another reality.
With a conversation about ghosts at a dinner and incredibly rich shots of long hallways with creaking doors, Dominique is borderline Hitchcockian in its rollout. The pressure she feels, as those around her present her with a reality that differs from her own, threatens to absorb her very soul. It doesn’t help that she is seeing suspended skeletons in a house that seems permanently lit with red and green lights. {googleads}
Directed by Michael Anderson (Logan’s Run), Dominque is not a perfect British chiller, but damn if it isn’t startling, brooding, and intense. Because Dominique’s husband is after her wife’s inheritance and, when he gets some help with the new chauffeur to drive her mad, she does exactly as they planned. Greed knows no limits.
Except it will be Dominique who has the last laugh in this revenge from the grave. The long black coat that she wears in the after life will be the very same one she uses to hang him by, metaphorically speaking. With haunting piano medleys, an unordered gravestone (with the husband’s name carved on it), and some other poltergeist activities occurring in the home, it truly feels and LOOKS like Dominique is back from the grave, and this time it will be her husband who will pay the price. 
Because she’s not about to let her inheritance go without a fight.

Newly scanned and remastered in 2K from the best surviving sources, Dominique looks as good as it is ever going to get. Presented with an aspect ratio of 1.85, it is the punched-up color you will notice first. The reds are delicious and the greens are fertile. The blues go deep, too. From the whites of the halls in the mansion to the glint of silver in the moonlight as Ballard himself goes mad, the transfer has the film loaded with details and fresh-looking life. The sound is presented in a choice between DTS HD MA 5.1 and 2.0 options.
