It just might be one of the scariest ghost movies I have ever seen. There are few words to describe the sheer terror that this film, a classic tale of the supernatural, stirs up within me. Time to keep one eye open in the night again, because The Entity is back in action, doing what it does best: terrifying audiences of all ages.
The Entity, based on the 1978 novel of the same name, is damned uncomfortable. A ghost that rapes? Chilling. The film, directed by Sidney J. Furie is wicked-smart in its tension and in its supernatural handling as a young Barbara Hershey, in the role of a single mother, is repeatedly attacked and raped by a ghost. With few who believe her, she’s faced to deal with it alone until a friend helps, but even that is not enough to escape the violent attacks of this vengeful force.
The film’s lasting effect might have more to do with author/screenwriter Frank De Felitta than it does the woman who’s story it is based off of, one Doris Bither. Google her name and the case itself. The picture of the orbs around her is interesting, but there is more than enough evidence to dispute her claims of being raped by three ghosts. Believe her or doubt her. {googleads}
None of that matters, though, because The Entity, now on blu-ray thanks to a wonderfully on-point handling by Scream Factory, is a damned classing tale of traumatizing supernatural attacks.
Co-starring Ron Silver as Dr. Sneiderman, David Labiosa as Billy Moran, George Coe as Dr. Weber, and Margaret Blye as Cindy Nashand, The Entity remains a disturbing look at the supernatural forces. Even if, in the film’s goofy ending, it abandons all logic and goes off the deep end with a plan to trap or bait the unseen force with liquid helium in order to “freeze” it, this film – with several unforgettable moments of sheer terror – will cause you pause when alone in your home. What was that moving the curtains? A breeze? Is the window even open?! 
Mixing science with the supernatural is never a good idea for the cinema, though. There has to be a precise balance. The Entity goes a bit overboard with the scientific explanations and, about halfway through this haunted tale of misery and poltergeist-like happenings, attempts to school us on the science behind ghostly shenanigans and possible explanations for how childhood traumas can seem like supernatural events. The psycho-babble does end, though, and the haunts take over, saving this movie from being dismissed by our brains as complete gobbledygook, à la John Boorman’s excursion into explaining away the supernatural in Exorcist II: The Heretic.
Welcome home, cunt. The Entity is now on blu-ray thanks to this Collector’s Edition from Scream Factory.

With a new 2K scan of the original camera negative, Scream Factory gives fans of this little shocker something to celebrate. The images are crisp and detailed and retain their edges. Framed in a tight 1:85:1 aspect ratio, this 1080p transfer is good, good stuff. Colors are bold. Shadows run deep and the crisp textures in the walls and in the backgrounds of this slasher are focused. The DTS-HD stereo soundtrack is perfectly suited for the film.
