Ok, let's get this out of the way. My e-mail address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. I've cleared out my e-mail box as I'm sure it will explode with all you Jackassers out there telling me what a dork I am for not approving Jackass Number Two. And it'll more than likely be the same people I heard from after my review of Team America: World Police. Anyway, here goes:

What is the point of Jackass Number Two?

You say, "to make us laugh." I respond, "So what. I've heard heroin makes you feel good." Doesn't mean either should be indulged. Some things are just bad no matter what the context. Jackass Number Two is one of these things. Now I'm not going to sit here and say I didn't laugh. In fact, I was in stitches most of the time. But just because a movie accomplishes one goal does not mean it deserves a high rating. If I were to set out with the goal of making a terrible movie, does it become a good movie if I succeed? No. Bad is bad and wrong is wrong.

Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Bam Margera and the rest of the Jackass crew, return in Jackass: Number Two, the follow-up to 2002's wildly popular Jackass: The Movie. In case you weren't sure, the reason Jackass Number Two bucked the Hollywood trend of using the Roman numeral 2 to denote itself as a sequel, was so they could employ a euphemism for the act of defecation. That's about as clever and sophisticated as the humor gets in this one. Granted, it never shoots for anything higher than that, but it hits its target 100% of the time. Oh ... and they do defecate on screen.

In case you didn't know, the Jackass movies consist of a series of boneheaded stunts, skits, and dangerous pranks mostly involving themselves, but sometimes pulled on unwilling third parties. We're not talking about innocent Candid Camera type antics here though. More like X-rated Fear Factor on steroids. But whereas Fear Factor ensures the well being of its participants with safety gear, you'll rarely find any padding in Number Two. In fact, there seems to be some kind of badge of honor in shunning its use. Sure, some of the pranks amount to nothing more than harmless fun, but others turn out to be downright dangerous. It's also important to mention here that most of the movie's humor comes from bodily functions, mutilation of private body parts, insertion of foreign objects in body openings, and otherwise just watching these guys hurt themselves. So, if you enjoy this kind of humor, there's no equal to Number Two. Conversely, if semen sight gags, crab-infested pubic hair, nude dwarfs, or beer bong enemas (including the aftermath of a beer bong enema) easily disgust you, then I recommend you stay away in droves.

Many of the stunts in Number Two are not only grosser, sicker, and more tasteless than in the original, but they also crank up the danger factor a few notches as well. In fact, in one skit, Knoxville narrowly misses having his gut ripped open as a giant rocket which he is straddling Slim Pickens-style - misfires. The antics seem like playful fun at first, but as the movie goes on, we begin to wonder just how far these guys will go. Will it be funny if someone is seriously injured? Should I laugh if someone dies? Will our laughter and approval automatically cause a reciprocal escalation of the danger and gross out factor if they decide to do another?

I really began to feel sad for these guys. Sure they made their own decision to perform for the movie, but we get a sense they'd really rather be doing something more legitimate. Especially when Margera exclaims, "I hope there won't be a Jackass 3." But then again, perhaps there's not that much of a market in show biz for imbeciles and dwarfs that like to do hurtful things to their privates. Let's look on the bright side; maybe this opens up a new revenue stream for the type.

Among some of the funniest skits are "Bad Grandpa", "Old Man Balls", and "Naked Old Lady." It's not a coincidence that these skits are the ones that involve a bit of ingenuity and original thought as the guys face the challenge of performing visual gags for passersby on the street. For some reason I just find it more entertaining to watch the reactions of innocent bystanders who've just witnessed a placard-toting devil emerge from the smoldering depths of a construction site than seeing a leech attach itself to one's eyeball. Call me crazy.

Jackass Number Two is one of those movies that will polarize its viewers. Those who love it will undoubtedly accuse those who don't of sitting atop their high-horses. Those who don't care for it will refuse to acknowledge its purpose in society. But one thing is for certain; Jackass Number Two is bottom of the barrel humor most cherished by those who don't mind their place at the bottom of the barrel. Chris Pontius sums up the experience best when he admits after one skit, "I'm ashamed of myself. I really am."
