Friday the 13th Collection: Deluxe Edition

Ki-ki-ki-ma-ma-ma.  Two repeating syllables is all it takes to conjure up memories of pure evil slashing away at fleshy objects in the night.  I know we fans of Friday the 13th and its many incarnations have been burnt before by subsequent releases of these films, but Scream Factory - issuing ALL the films together with love, care, and respect - have seriously come through with their latest release the Friday the 13th Collection.

It's time, my friends, time for all us we, the hardworking people of the world - to spend a fat wad of cash and return to the haunted woods of our youth. Don't worry, though, you won't be in this forest alone. Here, there is a camp, and at that camp, you are never alone...for long. There will be companions you know here - stars like Adrienne King, Amy Steel, Dana Kimmel, Melyssa Ade, Loyd Albin, Kevin Bacon, and Kane Hodder - and they will be walking alongside you.  There will also be lots of weed - sometimes growing in the forest - for you to smoke and, if you listen hard enough, you might just catch - drifting in the wind - the high pitched squeal of innocence as it gets maimed by a killer wearing a hockey mask.

"this blu-ray release is also loaded with KILLER special features and includes all of the previously released extras plus NEW bonus materials"

Yes, my friends, Camp Crystal Lake is once again open and Jason Voorhees is back in the business of killing horny teenagers.

And that isn't necessarily a bad thing either because Scream Factory, complete with a rugged slipcase which has some AWESOME art wrapping around it, is giving audiences the chance to own all 12 films - in both theatrical and uncut versions - in the Jason Voorhees legacy with their remarkable release of Friday the 13th Collection.  Spread out over SIXTEEN discs, this exhaustive offering from Scream Factory is already selling out - making the limited edition set, which includes both the 36” x 24” lithograph from artist Devon Whitehead and the 24” x 36” Friday the 13th 40th Anniversary poster from Joel Robinson, a rare item indeed.

But it has to start somewhere, so we go back to the beginning with both the theatrical and uncut version of the original.  Produced and directed by Sean S. Cunningham and written by Victor Miller, Friday the 13th, being the first independent movie to get distributed by a major studio, never seems to get the credit it deserves.  We take it for granted with much of the discussion revolving around which film, Halloween or Friday the 13th, is better.  Let’s not do that anymore.  Each film deserves its reputation and its accolades.  Friday the 13th Collection: Deluxe Edition

From the opening few moments to the classic score by Harry Manfredini and beyond, the original Friday the 13th is damn brilliant, never ceasing to be entertaining as a killer is let loose on some unsuspecting camp counselors and Walt Gorney as Crazy Ralph warns them all of their impending doom.  Well-paced and never short on skin or sharp knives, even hitchhikers aren’t safe from the killer in these woods.

But who is responsible for the murders?  That’s the real kicker in this slasher and it is a twist that still leaves people’s heads rotating as Friday the 13th begins in 1957 and ends in the modern era, with 11 more films to cycle through.

So much death . . . and they are ALL here in the Friday the 13th Collection.

Notwithstanding the movies included in the set, this blu-ray release is also loaded with KILLER special features and includes all of the previously released extras plus NEW bonus materials, including new audio commentaries with cast and crew of the films.  There are hundreds of rare and never-before-seen photographs, film clips, outtakes, archival documents, conceptual art and behind-the-scenes footage into a whole new experience that seamlessly blends from one film to the next.

Both the highs and the lows of the franchise are seen here – with a very cool look at Part VI: Jason Lives getting special mention (and a much deserved warm reception).  Covering all twelve films, this release is the ultimate tip of the mask to one of the most iconic and enduring horror franchises.Friday the 13th Collection: Deluxe Edition

Featuring some serious input from creator Cunningham, this set recalls its Halloween-inspired origins and its “branching off” upon the completion of Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left.  And to think it all started with merely a title and some promo art.  That’s how franchises are made, folks.  Yes, indeed, Jason Voorhees and his mother – even before there was a screenplay – were introduced to filmgoers through a poster only.  Talk about having an “if you build it they will come” vision.

Each film  (with a few extended looks), looks remarkable - especially in 4K.  This is truly a monumental feat for this Halloween season and its contents never become tedious - even Jason Takes Manhattan looks shockingly good here.  Even the filmmakers discuss that one.  And the fashions!  While it could be argued that the Voorhees clan will never be out of fashion, it is painfully obvious that some of the films – securely grounded in the era of their birth – are often exactly that the further into the 1980s they go.

Starting in 1980 and ending with the greased engine of 2009's reboot, Scream Factory invites you to go Trick or Treating alongside the matriarchial camp cook who went psychotic and killed a small group of sexually curious and sexually active camp counselors and frolic along with her masked son.  Is there a better way to celebrate 40 years of causing teenagers all over the world to scream with delight?  I don’t think so.

Scream Factory’s Friday the 13th Collection will release, appropriately enough, on October 13th of this year.  Pre-order your set now, the Limited Edition set is already sold out and, speaking as one who owns it, the art is spectacular.  Act fast!

Along with a selection of new interviews, commentaries, and new transfers, are NEW Slashed Scenes – the long-awaited uncut gore footage from Friday The 13th Part 2, and much, much more.

Video:

The HD release of the Friday the 13th Collection sports brand-new 4K scans of the original 35mm negatives for the original run of films.  The aspect ratio for most of the films in the set is 1.85:1 (but there are 2.40:1 and 2.35:1) and the images are loaded with fine details as black levels are consistent, defined, and brilliantly replicated here, holding their edges.  The images - whether they be at the camp, in the city, in Hell, or in space - are crisp and black levels – especially on the streets – absolutely POP. Colors are bold, bright, and shadows are thick with lines and deep blacks. The night scenes – and there are a lot of them – are detailed and heavy with edges. The colors, thanks to some awesome lighting effects, are bold and bursting with color. Saturation levels are on point and so too is the restored audio.

Audio:

Loaded with the original stereo 2.0 PCM uncompressed audio and new 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Surround Sound options, this set of 12 movies delivers both the thumps and the bumps of the slasher genre.

Commentary:

  • Feature commentary audio track with director Chris Addison
