A Nun's Curse

Let the Nunsploitation flicks resume!  It’s time to face your fears.

Writer/director Tommy Faircloth returns this May with what has to be his best film yet.  A Nun’s Curse is both tense and frightening as the diabolical Sister Monday (genre icon Felissa Rose of Sleepaway Camp fame)  returns to carry out some much needed salvation courtesy of the long knife she has sheathed in the cross she carries on her hip.

"A Nun’s Curse, complete with head turning flashbacks, is a movie for people who like to be scared"

From jaws to balls and beyond, no body part is safe from Sister Monday’s cruel judgment.  There is a special priority placed throughout this feature on astounding atmospheres which comes, as a fan of European horror highs, exceptionally appreciated.  This makes this independent horror flick soar in my book, differentiating it from other offerings.

A Nun’s Curse, complete with head turning flashbacks, is a movie for people who like to be scared.  After all, that’s the driving force behind the girl at the center of this supernatural story that is set inside an abandoned and very creepy prison.  There are shadows growing longer here with every passing hour.  And Sister May, as far as Ashley-Kae (Erika Edwards) is concerned, is everywhere.  {googleads}

While talking about this, she discovers her old childhood drawings.  Or is it just her mind playing tricks on her.  After all, her father raised her on stories of her and, in turn, created an intense fear and sense of reverence toward the Sister.  What it creates for us is an atmosphere of fear that proves to be rewarding as the girl goes toe-to-toe with the supernatural.

“You kinda sound like a Dateline 20/20 voice-over.”  That’s the opinion the shy Michael (Gunner Willis, The Resident) has of Ashley as she, with drama and intrigue, narrates the events that happened in the abandoned prison where a spooky nun, Sister Monday, killed the prisoners therein.  She’s been obsessed with the nun’s killing ways ever since she was a child and is currently doing her thesis on Sister Monday.

And she’s here to explore.  Ashley is into photography and history and Michael is choosing this weekend - alongside her sister, Gabby (Kristi Ray) and boyfriend Anthony (Damian Maffei, The Strangers: Prey at Night) - to get to know his fellow student.  The problem is that Michael is a bit more cautious than she is.

With gory flashbacks of Sister Monday’s gruesome kills - all thanks to Redhouse FX - we immediately understand the danger that Ashley and Michael, who follows her around like a puppy, are in.  Hell, they ALL are in danger.A Nun's Curse

Clever in its scares and its wits, the screenplay offers chilling moments with a group of characters that feel very real - even if their bickering is to be expected.  Sisters, you know, don’t always get along and these two are prime examples of why they don’t.  So, yeah, arguing ensues among the girls as dick jokes reign supreme among the boyfriend.  Meanwhile, Michael lollygags after Ashley as missing car keys leads to a night in the defunct jail and so on.

But Faircloth gives us plenty of atmosphere effects to distract us from ANY character weaknesses that might be found in the script and also provides plenty of steely blue shadows as major kills happen near the hour mark of the feature.  I’m still grimacing over them.  Ouch, man, just ouch!   All of which makes this nunsploitation flick matter.

Get on your knees and pray for daylight!  A Nun’s Curse premieres on DVD and Digital May 12 from Uncork’d Entertainment.
