Two plumbers are forced to save the residents of a building when they discover a killer creature in the pipes! Holy Hell, yes! Where has this film been all of my life?!
It seems in Canada, where the horror comedy hybrid is alive and well in the hands of director Vivieno Caldinelli and writer Brandon Cohen, who deliver a fun frightfilled practical effects heavy monsterpiece of morbid mayhem with Scared Shitless. A key sequence tells all you need to know about this gross-out ghoul-laden flick.
The plumbers, feeling this is a routine job, go about their work, but as Don reaches into the pipe, something grabs his arm from inside the bowl! Uh-oh! The plumbing shakes, the pipes groan, and suddenly the toilet erupts in a geyser of sewage and slime, hurling Don across the room. Out of the mess crawls the creature — a grotesque, wet, vaguely humanoid monster born from genetic waste flushed into the building’s pipes.
Full of disgusting moments of lunacy and sheer ridiculousness, one hapless plumber (Steven Ogg) and his germaphobic son (Daniel Doheny) are forced to get their hands dirty to save the residents of an apartment building when a genetically engineered, blood-thirsty, creature escapes into the plumbing system.
If that sounds like fun to you, just know Scared Shitless is going to take you for a ride as the film also has heart which ultimately overcomes its campy aspects. Sure, sure, this film is all about the frenetic fun but, thankfully, that’s not the limit as this B-movie inspired madness isn’t afraid to get a bit maudlin and downright moody as the two main characters are having to overcome the death of Sonny’s mom.
To help Sonny overcome his germaphobia, Don drags him out on a routine house-call where they encounter a plumber's worst nightmare… a vicious killer creature that’s swimming through the pipes, killing the building's tenants in an increasingly grisly fashion.
Clocking in at a quick 76-minutes, Scared Shitless is a breeze and should get any Saturday night off with a bang. The film is both fun and funny, blending lo-fi elements with strong practical effects as things go gloriously wrong for these two plumbers.
Scared Shitless is currently available to rent or buy in the U.S. on Amazon Prime Video. It is also available on Google Play Movies/Apple TV. Don't forget to flush!
