Hallowed Ground (2019)

“Inside me lives a dragon!”

Well, dang me to heyell, rural Mississippi just got a wee bit weirder!

I love it when horror films open with a bloodcurdling statement.  And that’s exactly what Hallowed Ground does, nearly shaking us to the core with a bloody beginning that sees a sacred space being mutilated thanks to a war between Native Americans and settlers.  Something has gone amiss.  We don’t quite know what it is, but it is definitely a bloody result that leaves a skull and a bit of spine left on the cold and damp ground.

"Sometimes schlocky, sometimes serious, the film manages to scare up a couple of good deals on meat mutilations"

But, before we go any further, prepare yourself for a bit of a slow burn when it comes to horror. Hallowed Ground, after that opening, is in no rush to get to the ghastly and the gristle.  This film, presented by Uncork’d Entertainment, takes its time and maybe that’s a bit of a miss when it comes to B-grade theatrics, but when it decides on a killing, well, it definitely brings the blood and the guts to the buffet table.

Hallowed Ground, a new horror film from writer-director Miles Doleac (Demons), demands that there be no digging while on this family’s sacred soil.  That will be REALLY hard for the archeologists who have arrived for a bit of a time out in their busy lives.  You see, Alice (Lindsay Anne Williams) cheated on her wife, Vera (Sheri Eakin), and now the two, in order to rebuild the trust in their marriage are dialing things back to basics and getting away from the city for a bit of a respite. {googleads}

But the chilling warning from Nita (Mindy Van Kuren) at the lodge that they are staying at has their curiosity peaked.  They are encouraged to enjoy their stay and the spirituality of the place, but they are warned to not cross the property line as there will be consequences.  Weird, right?  This secluded cabin stay just got interesting.

And, as these things often do, their stay leads to a reignition of not only their love for each other (maybe), but also the blood feud that is at the heart between the Native American owners of the camp and their weird neighbors, the white Klan who likes to PUNISH all those who dare trespass onto their property.  These people are wackadoos, hating all sorts of differences in people – especially homosexuality.  And they relish in their punishment of all those who dare disturb their side of the property line.

Co-starring Ritchie Montgomery (The Magnificent Seven), a very devilish Jeremy Sande (as the photographer who Alice slept with), and a creepy kid holding a dead cat, Hallowed Ground will teach you to obey all signs. No one comes onto this property and lives to tell what is on the other side of the property line.  Sometimes schlocky, sometimes serious, the film manages to scare up a couple of good deals on meat mutilations.Hallowed Ground (2019)

Hallowed Ground is a bit too long for its B-movie tale of murder and massacre.  Sure, once the killing gets going, it definitely delivers the demented goods.  But all the flashbacks add up to little more than dramatic tease as the affair is disclosed and then told again and again while the threat of the crazed blood cult gets compounded thanks to the local authorities AND their sworn allegiances to the blood cult.  Sometimes this works, other times it just drags out the story needlessly.  Of course, for my tastes, much of the drawn-out drama is forgiven when the red-hooded blood cult makes their appearance and start punishing all the trespassers with some 1970s-styled bare-bottom caning.

The bones of the dead still mingle with the living. Hallowed Ground is in select theaters starting June 7, and on VOD/DVD June 11.
