First Contact (2023)

Is anybody out there?  For a long time, this question has been on the minds of stargazers and scientists.  It is even on the mind of the scientist whose close encounter opens First Contact.  The scene is tense, unexpectedly violent, and full of solid practical effects, which makes this film, directed by Bruce Wemple (Wendigo, Monstrous), a solid entry into the whole ALIENS ARE REAL AND THEY ARE PISSED OFF subgenre of horror films.

"Everything about First Contact works to create a fun creature feature that definitely elevates the pulse"

Everything about First Contact works to create a fun creature feature that definitely elevates the pulse.  From the solid practical effects to the intriguing performances (which includes a very unique alien possession of sorts), this carefully crafted narrative digs in its claws and doesn’t let up as the two estranged adult siblings, Casey and Dan, of the scientist who opened the movie have to come together and discover exactly what happened to him on that deadly night.

It seems the whole world is obsessed with alien encounters and, turns out, they are happening at an alarming rate.  But there is a connective thread which makes their randomness more dangerous than could ever be imagined.  Which is why these two siblings are trying to make sense of their late father’s incomplete work. They soon learn that their father’s work was far more dangerous than they could ever imagine.

And this is a turn which I really like about this thriller.  Sure, we are dealing with aliens here, but this one has a good trick up its sleeve as one guy finds himself being physically transformed by his encounter and it is at this point that First Contact takes a great turn and delivers a solid change-up to what we might be otherwise expecting.First Contact (2023)

Because an evil entity, buried in time and space for millions of years, has been released and has begun wreaking havoc on the locals. One by one the bodies start to pile up. Now, Dan and Casey must figure out the secrets of this extra – dimensional monster before it’s too late.

With a great cast - which includes Anna Shields, James Liddell, Chris Cimperman, Caitlin Duffy, and Paul Kandarian, First Contact is a creature feature of extraterrestrial origins.  It is solid in its pacing and effective in creating stirring atmospheres, thanks to its use of locations and its practical effects.

Heads up!  Uncork’d Entertainment will release First Contact to Digital and DVD on June 6.
