Dark Entities (2023)

Low in budget and yet high in effective shocks, Dark Entities, a new horror film from Terror Films, manages to scream out in sheer terror as it keeps its audience from checking out as one unfortunate family finds themselves inheriting a house that they can’t quite shake.

Sometimes the things we are given wind up possessing us.  This is the case in writer/director Brandon McLemore’s debut feature.  Dark Entities, while not original, is an ambitious two-horror horror film with more than a few supernatural haunts in its haunted halls as one unfortunate family finds itself moving into a new and very haunted home which was left to them by their deceased parents.

"an ambitious two-horror horror film with more than a few supernatural haunts in its haunted halls"

While we get little word on the tragedy which took their lives, we do get a 1970’s-soaked horror film which operates like a charm with more than a little wink and a nod to the horror films of that era.  There’s a lot in this haunting to take in as Wes (Brandon McLemore), his sister, Vera (Elena Ontiveros), and little brother, Ethan (Jackson Lee Turner) are treated to a hodgepodge of haunted happenings: noises, voices, ghosts at the end of the bed, and more!  You will be able to spot the influences, but that’s part of the fun to be had as McLemore guides viewers through hid haunted bag of tricks.

After a shocking prologue the terror begins with a clawing sound at the walls.  Something is trying to work its way into Vera’s bedroom from the attic.  It’s aggressive and manic, already putting the audience on watch for the creep factor, which is stoked by the rumors from the nearby town of this house’s hauntings. Dark Entities (2023)

And it is solidified by the discovery of some antique jewelry and Wes’ own mood as he begins to spiral into a madness which audiences of this type of horror film are already all too aware of.  Like I said, it is easy to spot the film’s influences, but thanks to the direction of McLemore and the dedication to the film’s setting, the atmosphere of this horror film remains engaging and damned effective in building up the supernatural presence which is bound to explode over this unfortunate family.

They soon discover the house holds dark secrets that seek to threaten everything they hold dear. Convinced the strange occurrences are a result of trauma, they seek out logical explanations with little success. They look to the help of a parapsychologist as the supernatural forces become life threatening. With time running out, will they be able to survive the dark entities?

Starring Elena Ontiveros, Brandon McLemore, Jackson Lee Turner, and Warren McLemore, discover what’s in the walls of the Winters house this April. Dark Entities is available worldwide on April 14 from Terror Films on digital.
