The Fall Guy (2024)

In a thrilling nod to the daredevils and nameless faces behind the scenes of moviemaking, The Fall Guy, directed by former stuntman himself David Leitch, is a totally ridiculous, yet always fun, action/comedy force that showcases the often overlooked world of stunt people. And it appropriately hits theaters on the anniversary of the airing of the ‘80s TV Show’s last episode, from which it gets its name and inspiration.

"doesn't just entertain; it inspires a newfound appreciation for the unsung heroes of cinema"

Starring Ryan Gosling as battle-scarred, veteran stuntman Colt Seavers, the film dives deep into the lives of those who perform the death-defying acts that make our favorite movies memorable. With its white-knuckle action sequences, emotional depth, and meta awareness, The Fall Guy is more than just an action film; it's a story about resilience, love, growth, and the art of cinema itself.

Early in the film we meet Colt who is happily in love with camera operator Jody (Emily Blunt) as the two play flirty-flirt on the set of their current film. It’s easy to imagine how many relationships actually develop on the sets of Hollywood movies. When an accident during a stunt gone awry leaves Colt with a broken back, their relationship falls apart as Colt drops from the Hollywood scene and takes employment as a parking lot valet.

Flash forward to a year later when Colt is drafted back to a Hollywood production on the Australian set of a new action film, being directed by none other than Jody who gets her industry break with a big studio sci-fi actioner called Metal Storm. Though reluctant to get back into smashing up his body for a paycheck, Colt agrees to the job with hopes of rekindling the flame the two once shared.

Turns out though, Colt has also been recruited by the film’s ruthless producer (Hannah Waddingham, “Ted Lasso) to track down the Metal Storm’s action star, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor, Bullet Train), whose disappearance she is keeping from the studio and the media. So, Colt performs the film’s most outrageous stunts, while trying to charm himself back into the good graces of Jody, and also, unwittingly, finding himself ensnared in a sinister, criminal plot that just might push him to to the edge. The Fall Guy (2024)

Gosling delivers a charismatic performance, embodying the raw physicality and nuanced emotions of a seasoned stunt performer who learns to view his craft as nothing short of superhuman. His portrayal of Colt brings to life the complexities of a man who is at once indestructible on set and profoundly human off it. And he’s also quite funny. Waddingham's performance, filled with numerous bouts of sheer panic and anxiety, complements Gosling beautifully, offering a glimpse into the lives of those affected by the movie industry's high stakes. Blunt also shines with what she gets, though she’s mostly the McGuffin that keeps the thing moving along.

Beyond its adrenaline-pumping action, The Fall Guy resonates with universal themes of resilience and self-actualization thanks to writers Drew Pearce, and  Glen A. Larson. Their script shines a light on the individuals who risk it all for the sake of art, reminding us that every fall is an opportunity to rise stronger. The film doesn't just entertain; it inspires a newfound appreciation for the unsung heroes of cinema.

For action movie fans and romantic comedy junkies alike, The Fall Guy is a rare gem that combines spectacular stunts, charming characters, and an endearingly funny love story into a compelling tribute to the world of stunt work. Though not perfect by any means, the film not only solidifies Leitch's reputation as an ace of action cinema, but also serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and spirit of those who work behind the camera.

You'll fall hard for the Native 4K Dolby Vision HDR10 encode of The Fall Guy which is absolutely spectacular. Shot on native 4K with Arri Alexa 35 cameras, the picture is stunningly sharp and crisp.

And with so many visual things going on at all times, it's fun to marvel at the colors which are always bright and vibrant thanks to the HDR encode, and the details which hold up nicely, even in the darkest of night and interior scenes.

Blacks are always solid with no digital crush, and display lots of detail, even in the corners of the picture.

Overall this is an excellent visual transfer and is the perfect specimen for showing off that big screen.

AUDIO

Here's where having a Dolby Atmos system will really pay off. Your room will come alive, particularly during the action sequences, as gunshots, explosions, and revving engines assault from every nook and cranny. Metalstorm! Enough said.

What's that they said? Despite the cacophonous assault on the ears, dialogue will always remain audible - in fact, it even gets a little side-to-side play.
