Breeders

Oh, boy.  If the alternate title shown in the opening credits isn't a sign of a really bad movie, then I don't know what it is.  Where do I even begin with this schlocky D-grade rip on extraterrestrial sex? If you are anything like me, you are aware of this movie for two reasons: Samantha Janus (EastEnders) and the practical creature design that, outside of all the female flesh on display, is the real highlight of this wacky flick.  Too bad we don't get to see more of the rubber suited antics.

"stupidly stuffed with way too many subplots as bland characters meet bland fates at the hands of confused cops and corny coeds"

Fatally flawed and laughably executed, Breeders (yes, a remake of the 1986 cheese-fest) makes for a jolly good time IF you go in with zero expectations and a keg of beer.  If you press play on this blu-ray from Code Red without those conditions being met then, well, I feel for you because after the CGI-heavy opening, in which a meteorite lands next to an all-girls college and an alien and a confused space vixen are exposed, Breeders loses its charm.

This bowl of soupy science fiction is written and directed by Paul Matthews (Hooded Angels) and, as it was originally titled Deadly Instincts, features all sorts of nubile young women giving their all - especially in showers - to preserve humanity . . . or something like that.  Who cares, though, right?  Just get to the gore and the sex.  Hold up.  What?  Like the man in the monster suit, it happens rarely. {googleads}

But when the monster is ready to start mating, the girls in the college disappear.  Leave it to Ashley Rowe, (Todd Jensen, Cyborg Cop) and Louise (Janus) to get to the bottom of it.  The cops in this flick are far too incompetent to correctly lift a flashlight to see through the catacombs as the monster has a quick game of hide-and-seek with them.  You can't count on them to help out.

Filmed in the UK and full of actors who (badly) pretend that they are born and raised in Boston, Breeders is way too sideways for its own good.  The plot - especially for a monster flick where sex is involved - is stupidly stuffed with way too many subplots as bland characters meet bland fates at the hands of confused cops and corny coeds.  Breeders

Breeders is where filler goes to get stuffed.

Code Red teams up with Dark Force Entertainment for this title.  The company offers this remake on blu-ray with a brand-new HD Master, complete with hours of extensive restorations made to the transfer.  To top it off, the title is released with a limited edition embossed cover that replicates the VHS release, showing the creature which is at the center of this alien reproductive flick.

Co-starring Oliver Tobias and Kadamba Simmons, Breeders is for D-grade cinema lovers only.

It’s an invasion of the most personal and terrifying kind. When a meteorite crash lands onto a Boston college campus and an alien beast is released, only one man understands its mission to mate. From the depths of an all girls college, the grotesque monster stalks his prey in a cat-and-mouse chase until the final conflict where only one species can survive.

Video:

Framed in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, this 1080p transfer is pretty decent, evening out the colors and sharpening the lines that were once blurry and murky.  Black levels are strong throughout and the colors pop with a nice level of detail that can be found in some of the close-up shots.  This is a cheap production and that also comes through thanks to the upgrade, which isn’t so great but that’s all to be expected when you are dealing with a film of this quality.

Audio:

A very tame DTS-HD stereo track is supplied for this alien invasion.
