It’s pseudoscience-du-jour . . . but with actors instead of the written word!!!
Vineland, New Jersey is about to become a hot spot for some pretty freaky and ghoulish stuff as one couple - one being a newly turned zombie - are about to walk down the aisle as husband and wife.
For reals. True love, after all, can hardly be thwarted by the undead.
The Zombie Wedding, directed by Micah Khan and written by Greg D'Alessandro, is chock full of one-liners and some nice visual puns as the Weekly World News (yes, the tabloid newspaper), branches out into the business of making movies. So, why not start with horror?! It’s about time, too. Things were getting pretty bland and stale out there in Hollyweird Land.
Unfortunately, The Zombie Wedding, while tasty at times, is just this shy of being completely fresh and original. Oh, it’s a great effort to be sure from Weekly World News Studios and there’s lots of fun to be had, too. The film just doesn’t really rise to the heights that its concept sets up when a human takes a zombie as a life partner.
I mean, why not make New Jersey the Ground Zero for the burgeoning zombie apocalypse?! Sounds like a good idea to me. Filled with some pretty vibrant colors and some crazy characters (think Tim Burton or John Waters and you get it), The Zombie Wedding gets its beginning right square on the chin as some WWN reporters cover the wedding of the year.
And, while we are on the subject of this former tabloid newspaper (with the best headlines in the industry!!), it’s about time Weekly World News gets their very own studio! With headlines as crazy as theirs, watching a movie as uproarious (and, at times, as groan-inducing) as their headlines is a bit of a no-brainer. How could the “news” organization that brought you all the best bits (or is it bites??) about the Bat-Boy, published the first photos of Heaven, broke the news about Zombies without borders, and featured an expose on Anna Kendrick dating a lizard go wrong when it comes to handling humor and horror?!
They don’t. They are just cutting their teeth here and, with a longer than necessary runtime, The Zombie Wedding kinda wears out its welcome before it's all said and done. A tighter handling on the cuts would have improved both the story and the comedy. Especially when Zack (Donald Chang) is bitten and turns all zombie-like, yet still feels nothing but love for his bride, Ashley (Deepti Menon). The two decide that, instead of calling it quits, they should show the world a new path forward and go forward with the wedding between human and zombie.
Both families are nervous for the big day, but it’s the judgmental humans who make the event even more challenging. During the ceremony the Zombies begin feeling brain deprived and the wedding takes a turn for the weird. Weekly World News reporters do their best to cover this wild Jersey wedding - while trying to stay alive!
The Zombie Wedding is based on the eponymous interactive play and is the first title to launch the Weekly World News IP-driven studio slate of movie projects. Starring Cheri Oteri ("Saturday Night Live"), Seth Gilliam ("The Walking Dead"), Heather Matarazzo (Scream, The Princess Diaries), Kevin Chamberlin ("Jessie"), Siobhan Fallon Hogan (Men in Black), Vincent Pastore ("The Sopranos"), Ajay Naidu (Office Space), and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, head down the aisle with a joke everyone is in on!
The Zombie Wedding debuts on Cable and Digital VOD September 13, 2024, including Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, Fandango At Home, Comcast, Dish, and DirecTV. The Zombie Wedding will also be available in select markets theatrically.
