Doctor strange - Movie Review

dvd5Marvel Studios continues to hammer out one successful movie after another. Their meteoric rise seems damn near unstoppable. With a trusted formula for heroics, heart, and comedy firmly in hand, the studio aims for the stars. Their latest offering is no different; it just slides into the mystical universe of sorcery. It is a spellbinding place where physics overlaps into a multiverse of intentions and realities. Are you ready to have your head rocked? Call it wild. Call it pseudoscience. Call it whatever you want. THIS is the territory of Doctor Strange.

Doctor Strange, a quasi-psychedelic trip into the many realms of mysticism and magic, is both a successful origin tale and an epic continuation of the universe the studio has successfully built thus far. Full of eye-popping visuals and lighter-than-air charm, Doctor Strange absolutely delivers a massive amount of entertainment, but it is the mystical surprises along the way that sends it so richly over the top.

You Sherlock fans can relax. So, too, can the fans of the character. Steve Ditko and Stan Lee’s creation is in good hands. Doctor Strange is imaginative, self-effacing and completely unstoppable in its far-reaching charisma. It is also – as it features an infinity stone of its own – a solid continuation in the MCU’s epic story building as it races toward the next Avengers movie. Audiences will NOT be disappointed. They should be chomping at the bit to see and HEAR what the movie does … especially with its use of Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive” off their very first album. Seriously. Marvel GOES there.

Starring the impeccable Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Dr. Stephen Strange, Marvel Studios’ new movie is AS GOOD AS Iron Man and, yes, that’s a statement I don’t make lightly. There is so much fun and martial arts woven into the tapestry that is Doctor Strange’s expansive universe that one could easily see this film released during the summer months and be a titan at the box office.

In this origin tale, we see a very snobbishly talented surgeon reduced to mere mortal-hood when a car accident effectively snaps his surging medical career. He becomes nomadic, foraging across the earth trying to find ANY way to restore a steadiness to his hands. What he discovers is beyond this earth, lading squarely in the magical realm of The Ancient One, an ageless Tibetan guru marvelously played by Tilda Swanson. Full of humor and grace, we witness one hell of a transformation and, quite honestly, only Cumberbatch could make it all feel so very poignant.

With strong characterization efforts and a script that redefines relationship building between its characters, the absolutely unkind Strange becomes – through some unexpectedly sharp training sequences – aware of his larger self. He is Doctor Strange: a cloak-wearing alchemist who saves more than just the present. Thanks to the Eye of Agamotto, he is a guardian of the past, too. How’s that for a Magical Mystery Tour?

The ensemble cast is rounded-out by Strange’s allies: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong and his enemies: Mads Mikkelsen, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Scott Adkins. And, yes, while parts of the film are indeed formulaic, the sheer amount of fun director Scott Derrickson (SinisterDeliver Us From Evil) and writer Jon Spaihts have infused this film with makes it remarkably catchy as hell.

And the sweeping visual aspect of the film – especially in 3-D – is not to be missed. To quote another science fiction flick, “My god, tt’s full of stars.” If you thought the visuals of Inception were mind-blowing, just wait until you catch the dazzling highs of Doctor Strange. Buildings fold into themselves. Worlds collide. Magic literally knows no bounds. The trailers – featuring some Inception-like moments – don’t even begin to describe the mind-melding fusion available to audiences within the doors of Doctor Strange.

That Marvel magic continues with the “comic book meet acid trip” highs of Doctor Strange. It is a wild ride. Prepare yourselves accordingly and get ready to go cosmic, my friends. Do yourself a HUGE favor, though. Cough up the money to see the film in 3-D. It’s actually worth it. Just stay for the credits. Please.

Doctor Strange is MARVELous.
