A killer pumpkin?! Sure. I’ll bite.
It seems Hulu has their ducks in a row this Halloween season with the release of their original film, Carved, another original horror movie playing as part of “Huluween” this year. The film, a horror comedy by way of a sentient pumpkin, is all about the carnage AND the camp as a disparate group of survivors become trapped in a historical reenactment village on Halloween night and must work together if they are going to survive the maniacal attack of a vengeful pumpkin.
Directed by Justin Harding, Carved is based on the short film of the same name, which he also wrote and directed for a shorts program for Huluween Film Fest before teaming up with writer Cheryl Meyer to pen this version. The resulting partnership is a horror film which knows its audience and plays for laughs as carving pumpkins becomes a bloodbath for the humans who usually wield the knives.
Time’s up, mofos! Carved is all about the pumpkins and they are done with us and ready to take their revenge! Full of plenty of gags and teenage heartbreak during a Halloween season, Carved is a surprise hit for the season’s bleedings as a bunch of teens must do battle with a killer pumpkin who has had it up to here with being carved.
Go back to turnips, humans!
Starring Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Corey Fogelmanis, Wyatt Lindner, Carla Jimenez, Sasha Mason, Jonah Lees, DJ Qualls, Marc-Sully Saint-Fleur, Elvis Nolasco, Matty Cardarople, Jackson Kelly, and Chris Elliott, the film is both humorous and horrible, making perfect for a Friday night viewing after having one too many beers.
The pacing is easy and some of the laughs, especially delivered with a whole lot of stereotypical pot-head humor, are pretty solid . . . even if they aren’t always the freshest selection. There’s plenty to laugh at, especially as the socially awkward Matty Cardarople stumbles his way through a pumpkin patch while listening to hip-hop and later deadpans his way through a night of revengeful roots.
This is a part of WorthenBrooks’ first-look horror slate with Hulu Originals. It was developed with David Brooks, Debbie Liebling, Arbi Pedrossian, and Jenna Cavelle serving as producers. Miles Alva is an executive producer. Lorne Raimi, Alex Hansen, and Nick Page are co-producing.
Carved premieres on October 21st. No matter which side you are on, get those knives ready!
