Zombie 3 - Bluray

4 beersWhen birds attack!

Being pecked in the face repeatedly is no laughing matter. I once had a run-in with a chicken when I was a small boy. It’s no fun. Those dinosaur descendants will peck your eyes out if you aren’t careful. In Zombie 3, now on blu-ray thanks to Severin Films and a fine 2K scan, it is the birds – once dead and now reanimated – that help spread the dangerous virus at the center of this horror flick. And those feathered fiends mean business.

“Give me Death One.” Just like that, beneath a green and red neon glow, the shot is administered and a human subject melts from the inside of his body before dying and then busting out of the glass he’s contained within. It is so violent of a reaction that it frightens even Dr. Alan Holder (Robert Marius), the maker of the compound, and his assistant. They want nothing to do with this military-grade weapon that, for our viewing pleasure, will soon have decapitated heads (discovered in refrigerators) levitating in logic-defying tourist attacks.

"Brain dead entertainment gets redefined in Zombie 3"

Not even the calming words of Blue Heart, the DJ who provides most of the film’s commentary and headbanging rock tunes (as zombies and birds are flung against the heads of survivors), can protect the audience from those who just want to feast on blood and bone. And there’s good reason for that…

Once out in the atmosphere, there’s no telling just what this virus will do.

Welcome to the brutal insanity that is Zombie 3. Directed by Lucio Fulci (who left the production before it was finished due to an illness) and Bruno Mattei, this horror film is a sequel in-name-only to Fulci's previous undead Italian trashterpiece. The film, written by Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi (of Troll 2 fame) hilariously comments on pollution while offering one fresh rock track after another as tourists and furiously horny soldiers on leave are attacked by agent-contaminated birds (yes, birds) before facing down fields full of zombies.

So, yeah, if you hate birds (and really long toenails) this probably isn’t the zombie movie for you. That being said, this flick does have one of my favorite lone man against an army of zombies sequences to every appear on film. GI Joe, Bo (Massimo Vanni), after the girl he is interested in (and actually saves) gets zombified and turns on him, faces a never-ending onslaught of Philippine extras (as gorifield zombies) as the lake, complete with a neon green glow, just bubbles with undead activity. Thankfully, Bo is quite good at karate kicks and acrobatic take-downs.

Zombie 3 - Bluray

Thanks to military “intelligence”, courtesy of General Morton (Mike Monty), the air itself is contaminated by this man-made virus. And no one is safe. No one. The Philippines aren’t ever going to be the same again. The infection spread begins in a resort’s bathroom as a hand is severed in a wrongheaded attempt to stop the virus and then a maid is attacked.

One by one, the dominos begin to fall until the entire place is swarming with the infected. The scenes of survival get wonkier as the infected grow. This film might be off its rocker when it comes to logic, but it is endlessly fun. That is until, yes, even the chickens turn.  Thankfully, Italian composer Stefano Mainetti is here to give us an amazing score as the good times grow and grow into a showdown of survivors and soldiers ordered to kill.

Also starring Deran Sarafian, Beatrice Ring (Interzone) and Massimo Vanni (Rats: Night of Terror), there’s no amount of armed hazmat-wearing soldiers can save this place now. Guess we will just have to chill and listen to Blue Heart on the radio. He won’t steer us wrong. After all, he’s one of us…right?

The new 2K scan of the original camera element is a sight to behold. Uncut and extra gooey, Zombie 3’s handling doesn’t disappoint. Some shots, due to the era of the day, are fuzzier than others but the image is reasonably well defined with crisp contrasts and solid textures. The blood, thanks to scenes of face-peeling, is bold and bright.. Colors are solid, with blues being a standout. Blacks are, too. Surprisingly, there's enough fine detail on display to make this seem revelatory with its closed-in location. The era-ready color palette looks terrific, too. The disc comes with a new DTS-HD English Mono Audio soundtrack.
