OnlyFangs is the kind of horror-comedy that feels like someone dared two filmmakers to mash up The Lost Boys with a startup pitch meeting—and somehow they accepted.
Paul Ragsdale and Angelica De Alba, the directors, confidently embrace the absurdity, creating a world where gig economy desperation and vampire chic collide. A wannabe monster hunter teams up with a group of vicious vampire girls to help them expand their "business" through a new app. The idea is so blatantly insane that you almost expect the movie to fall apart due to its own chaos. Rather, it feeds on it.
This is an electrified monster-sized mash-up of genres, and it works to deliver some honest laughs and demented fun as everyone is in on the joke. The actors are fully aware of the type of film they are in, and they never quit having fun with their characters, adding a frenzy to the movie that feels much bigger than it has any right to be.
Drew Marvick portrays the monster-hunter idiot with precisely the right amount of Gen-X burnout energy, Kansas Bowling gives a gleefully feral performance, and the vampire trio—led by actors like Jessa Flux and Nina Lanee Kent—expertly treads the line between seductive and absurd. They all seemed to grasp the assignment, which was to "have fun, bite hard, sell the insanity."
A particularly memorable moment occurs when the vampires and their tech-savvy companion finally get together to "innovate." It's a scene straight out of a Silicon Valley ideation meeting: sticky notes plastered everywhere, product names being tossed around, and monetization strategies being discussed. The only difference? Everyone's covered in blood, and the big question is whether the app should have a "don't murder me" option. It's a tone that perfectly captures the clumsy dance between horror and comedy, much like a Gen-Xer trying to navigate TikTok.
The movie perfectly captures the scrappy spirit that Ragsdale and De Alba embody. Their direction, a blend of neon-soaked grit and B-movie appeal, somehow keeps the story surprisingly coherent, given its wild premise, and manages to be stylish without trying too hard.
Fortunately, OnlyFangs doesn't pretend to be a sophisticated horror film. It's more interested in entertaining, spilling some blood, and poking fun at today's relentless work culture.
And it succeeds brilliantly at that.
