You Might be the Killer - Blu-ray

Camp Clear Vista is now hiring!  If you have a love for giving kids the time of their lives over summer vacation then this is the job for you.  It also helps if you have a love for horror films and long, sharp knives that are just perfect for slicing and dicing . . .

No?  Well, then just exactly how meta are you willing to get?  That’s the challenge that writer/director Brett Simmons puts forth in his hilarious takedown (and resurrection) of the slasher subgenre in Horror.  You Might Be the Killer is a bloody riot of pulpy madness.  I love it.  It is a film that, as a horror buff, I can’t recommend enough.  Co-written by Covis Berzoyne and Thomas P. Vitale, this is one hell of a wild ride through the woods around Camp Clear Vista thanks to the dark spirit that possesses a long dead woodcarver’s ancient mask.

"If you are a major hound of horror than this bone is for you!"

As deadly as it is when it comes to its beheadings, You Could Be the Killer, starring Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods) and Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother), is a refreshing tale of self-aware horror that features yet another group of camp counselors meet their gnarly demise at the hands of a masked serial killer.  Stylistically shot and edited together to keep a tally of dead camp counselors, the film is also a bit of a mystery as, for the first half of the movie, we are privy to an extended phone conversation of confusion and paranoia as Camp Clear Vista’s owner tries to jog his memory.

All Sam Wescott (Kranz) knows is that his face is covered in someone else’s blood.  The particulars are what we will eventually (and hilariously) learn. {googleads}

The kicker here is that he, suffering from memory loss, needs his very best good friend – a video store manager and horror film aficionado Chuck (Hannigan) – to help him figure out how to get out of the summer camp killing mess he has sunk into.  In my opinion, You Might Be the Killer is sharper than Scream with its satire and deadlier than Final Girls when it comes to its killing.  The end result is a self-referential movie that is simply a killer at its comedy and its cult-like charm.

Summer camp.  You know the terrain of this woodsy place by the lake.  Horny camp counselors in charge of large groups of clueless kids.  We have an assembly of counselors for this tale – featuring performances from Brittany S. Hall as Imani, Jenna Harvey as Jamie, Bryan Price as Steve "The Kayak King", Patrick Reginald Walker as Brad, Jack Murillo as Freddie, and Catt Bellamy as Drew – and they are all there to have a groovy time.  Think Wet Hot American Summer and you get the picture – except, in this movie, the land that camp is being held on has a bit of a supernatural backstory. And only Sam knows of its morbid history.  Spilling the beans by a campfire one night, he invites a whole lot of strangers he calls friends in on his family’s secret and, lead to the spot where a cursed mask lies in wait, will resume the grisly consequences of oversharing . . .

If you are a major hound of horror than this bone is for you!

Screen Media has a win on their hands here!  The 1080p/AVC- encoded transfer is an impressive digitally handled picture.  Fine detailed is practically overwhelming with the grains in the forest and fibers in the clothing being abundant.  Flesh tones are warm and visually full of detail.  The contrast is edged-up a bit (which is a good thing) and there are definite breaks in the colors and impressive shadows that are completely at play throughout the feature.  The vivid sense of the picture continues deep into the soundtrack which is presented in a wonderfully vibrant lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track and fully showcases the sound design.
