Tremors: Shrieker Island (2020)

From dry deserts to tropical islands, Tremors shows no signs of stopping anytime soon, but - if this is the end of the road for the franchise - it goes out on a hell of a high note thanks to Tremors: Shrieker Island.

"What better way is there to celebrate Tremors’ 30th Anniversary than with a solid sequel?!  Tremors: Shrieker Island brings solid camp to the Tremors institution"

Writer/director Don Michael Paul (Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man), returns to the Tremors franchise with yet another update on the long-running series.  This time, having restored some B-grade law and order with Tremors 5: Bloodlines and Tremors 6: A Cold Day in Hell, he takes these subterranean animals all the way to the tropics in a Jurassic Park meets Predator genre mashup that sees Michael Gross returning as Burt Gummer, the series’ only regular who bothers to keep turning up for these monster flicks.

This time, though, Gross is joined by Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) as Jimmy, a colleague who discovers some surprising seismic activities due to some unexpected Shrieker activity, and Richard Brake (Mandy) as an unhinged Big Game hunter who, as he owns Avex-Bio Tech, is responsible for organizing the hunting party on the island . . . and their targets are the familiar Graboids that have long plagued Gummer.Tremors: Shrieker Island (2020)

But Gummer’s vacation is interrupted by their reappearance and, rather expectedly, he becomes the leader of the expedition to hunt down and survive these new Shriekers.  With chainsaws and machetes, Gross and Heder team up to bring down every last one of the slime bags inhabiting the underground tunnels in the island.

Tremors: Shrieker Island is campy fun and often ridiculous, turning our heroes into “action” stars they have no intention of living up to.  Schwarzenegger types they are not and, thankfully, Heder and Gross make it work with playful attitudes as gross-out scenes of worm-infested gooiness come at us with intensity and an over-the-top swagger that mixes what I continue to like about the series with some crafty action bears.

Flame-throwers are unleashed and Heder, taunting the Shriekers with “Suck on this!” comments, rule the day.  Tremors: Shrieker Island is solid creature feature entertainment and, thanks to director Don Michael Paul’s continued dedication to the franchise, delivers with jellified Queen Beast action, a great and gooey climax, and wonderfully clever one-liners which makes this entry one of the best sequels to come along in the on-going franchise.

What better way is there to celebrate Tremors’ 30th Anniversary than with a solid sequel?!  Tremors: Shrieker Island brings solid camp to the Tremors institution.  It is now on blu-ray thanks to Universal Home Entertainment.

The head of the research facility and her second-in-command Jimmy (Jon Heder) locate the one man who is an expert in killing Graboids: the one and only, and now reluctant, Burt Gummer (Michael Gross). Once on board, Burt leads the group in an all-out war against the larger, faster, and terrifyingly intelligent Graboids and the swiftly multiplying Shriekers!

Video:

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment presents Tremors: Shrieker Island on 1080p with a solid transfer. With an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, this is a solid-looking HD release on a tropical island. It's crisp and detailed and features a bevy of strong shadows and dense blues. Digitally shot, there is a smoothness to the whole production that makes it look crisp and accurate as a new group of people tries to survive a new round of Graboids. The 1080p transfer does not disappoint. Lines are clear and the depth is evident in some of the cave scenes. Flesh tones are perfectly saturated

Audio:

The soundtrack – presented here on a standout DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack – is flawless.
