Bag Boy Lover Boy - Blu-ray Review

3 beersSick! Sick! Sick!  I love it, though, I really do.  Bag Boy Lover Boy is a downward spiral of psycho exploitation into cannibalism as one hot dog vendor on the Lower East Side dabbles with his talents and creates something new.  The gooey results of this low budget affair are pretty disturbing but nonetheless entertaining.

You know where EXACTLY it’s heading, too.  A busy street corner.  A hot dog stand.  Fresh meat.  And murder on the cook’s mind.  But then writer/director Andres Torres’ film wouldn’t be an exploitation film if the results were absolutely … tasteful.  And this one is sure to offend.

Starring Jon Wachter as Albert, a lonely young man who surrounds himself with hot dogs and pornography.  He’s not all there either.  When a grumpy customer forces photographer Ivan (Theodore Bouloukos) to come to Albert’s rescue, Albert believes he’s made a new friend.  He hasn’t.  Ivan wants to use his odd looks for a photography shoot involving a hot model and a plastic bag.

Unfortunately, the dim-witted Albert thinks Ivan actually gives a shit about him.  He gets used and abused and Ivan, manipulating Albert to prop himself up into the SoHo stratosphere with his fetish photos starring the poor kid and tosses crumbs at poor Albert’s feet.  But when Albert, who gets his hands on an old Polaroid Ivan once used, starts re-enacting the fetish shoots with hookers from the street, the cruel example Ivan provided manifests itself in a tense manner that becomes murder most foul.

Inspired by some of the attitudes filmmaker Torres witnessed operating a camera rental store in New York, Bag Boy Lover Boy works as well as it does thanks to the soul-stirring performance from Wachter.  The actor makes the role of Albert come across in a very realistic way; leading some audiences to believe this tale of manipulation and bullying might just be a story within a story.

It is not a true story.  It’s realistic, yes, but Albert is only a creation born out of frustration by artists who believe that negative interactions have unintended consequences.  If all that surrounds you is negativity, it’s going to build deep within and have to come out.  And shitty people – especially in New York and Los Angeles – need to be aware of how their actions affect others.

Wachter, who is a different sort of actor, is damn good as the artist without a voice.   He’s both funny and sad and, because he’s often caught daydreaming with his dick in his hands, probably shouldn’t be handling any type of food item.  He does, though, and turns the tables on his customers when his murder becomes a hobby.

Torres, who co-wrote the screenplay with Toni Comas, creates a rather honest portrait of an artist from the other side of the street on an incredibly low budget.  It’s damn impressive, making Severin’s release of the debut of Bag Boy Lover Boy a certifiable must see.  Maybe it could be funnier, but Gorehounds are sure to lick its exploitative splatter up.

Bag Boy Lover Boy serves its horror and its humor as raw as it gets.

Synopsis: In this “sincerely disturbing” (Indiewire) debut from co-writer/director Andres Torres, a slow-witted misfit named Albert (Jon Wachter, giving what HorrorNews calls “the best male performance in a horror film this year”) sells hot dogs all night from the most unsanitary food cart in downtown Manhattan. But when he’s invited to become the new model for a manipulative fetish photographer, Albert will be exposed to a seething city underbelly where desire masquerades as perversion and depravity poses as art. It may shock you.
