The CLoverfield Paradox - Blu-ray

This is a movie for anyone who has ever sent a voice message to themselves.  Whether a warning or a reminder, there’s always an interesting collision of realities that occurs when the past offers insight into the Here and Now.  William Faulkner suggested the past is never dead as it makes us who we currently are, but what happens to that idea when dimensions actually stretch themselves to the breaking point, to bring Ghostbusters into the mix, and cross their streams?  In truth, Peter Venkman, was right: it gets a little fuzzy . . .

. . . which is where The Cloverfield Paradox brilliantly comes into play.

"this is an intense and claustrophobic ride in space"

Starring Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O'Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo and Zhang Ziyi, this science fiction film is bubbling with ideas about messing with a whole lot of energy and the consequences it could have on the past, especially when – as an extra kick – dimensions collide and, as a result, familiar faces.

The film and its happenings – involving missing worms on a space station, the chaos on earth, and the far reaches of space itself – is, at times, truly a head trip as it seems to be hearkening back to some of the stories involving the USS Eldridge during the Philadelphia Experiment.  We aren’t talking about invisibility, though.  Just high amounts of energy and the results of messing with a power usually reserved for Gods.

Somehow producer J. J. Abrams tweaked screenwriter Oren Uziel’s spec script, originally titled The God Particle, into something that truly does fit within the happenings of 2008’s found footage flick Cloverfield, providing a reason for The Clover Creature itself.  The Cloverfield Paradox is far from underwhelming; it is, in fact, a pretty interesting voyage through space. {googleads}

Directed by Julius Onah (The Girl is in Trouble), this is an intense and claustrophobic ride in space.  The sleek design of the space station, where the research and experimentation must be held, offers hidden dangers as the crew, already thrust into a tense situation, find themselves blinked in and out existence thanks to the power they are messing with.

But then even their home seems lost . . .

The second Cloverfield-hijacked film made its debut on Netflix.  Whether or not that was a good move is beside the point.   With a great cast and a cool script that makes you question the very fibers of the reality around you, it makes for yet another satisfying entry into that world of monsters and humans.  And what a world it continues to be . . . this time we are on board a space station whose group of international astronauts have their hands full thanks to the consequences of using a particle accelerator in order to solve earth’s energy crisis.The CLoverfield Paradox - Blu-ray

When it comes to the Cloverfield mystery, this is yet another installment and, yeah, the mystery deepens as a result.  I am not going to mince ANY words when it comes to my appreciation of 10 Cloverfield Lane, the first spinoff that was, as originally written, not a part of the Cloverfield mythos.  The Cloverfield Paradox, being a straight up science fiction blast of theory and paranoia, is another spec script that originally had nothing to do with Cloverfield and its towering monster.  Yet, the final product absolutely works and, with a few familiar faces thrown in, it absolutely leaves me excited for this direct sequel that is currently being planned. This slow reveal is quite exciting.

The Cloverfield Paradox is now available on blu-ray thanks to Paramount.

Shot on FILM, the textures and the details are STRONG with this release from Paramount.  Framed in an 2.40:1 and including a kick-ass Dolby Atmos soundtrack, there’s little room for improvement on the visual punch of the film.  It looks fantastic and the black levels go deep.  The suits are crackling with fine detail and so too are the colors, keeping their shape thanks to some consistent edges.  Shadows are defined and expressive with layers.  Put it in, sit back, and CRANK it up.  You will be carried to another dimension.

Special Features:

With no DVD and only two supplemental features, this release is a bit of a disappointment.  Fans get a 14-minute look at the making of the movie, which includes its look into the Cloverfield mythos, the production of the movie, and some further explorations into the paradoxes that the film suggests.  Talk about opening a can of worms!  There is also a look at the great cast that has been put together here.
