Warner Bros., hoping to get its Hobbit franchise back on track, gives us our first look at the second chapter in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy via the trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

In the exciting trailer we learn that the second film picks up where the last one left off, with Bilbo, Gandolf and their merry band of dwarven friends journeying to reclaim their homeland, escape from the goblin king's lair, and to eventually face their biggest challenge yet: slaying the dragon Smaug who awaits in the treasure room of the Lonely Mountain.

Also recently released was the first teaser poster for the film (below) that features the lone figure of Bilbo near the entrance to the dragon's lair. We also got a look last week (via Entertainment Weekly) at Lost's Evangeline Lilly (below) as an elf warrior, and who also gets plenty of screen time in the new trailer.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will hit theaters this December on the 13th with the final installment, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, arriving on December 17th, 2014.
