What this week lacks in quantity of new titles hitting blu-ray and Ultra HD, it more than makes up for in quality with a handful of films making their home video debut and several classics getting lots of hi-def love.
Let’s kick it off this week with the new films debuting on blu-ray and/or 4K UltraHD high definition. First up is the wildly popular and critically successful romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians, directed by Jon Chu. Warner Bros. is blessing the film’s fans with both an Ultra HD + blu-ray + Digital HD release and a blu-ray + DVD + Digital release which includes a director’s commentary and some gag reels and deleted scenes.
Also debuting for home theaters this week is Lionsgate’s hi-def release of the blistering comedy drama Blindspotting that comes to us in the form of a Blu-ray + DVD + Digital package that includes a couple of commentaries, making-of’s, and some deleted scenes.
The Ken Marino-directed romantic comedy Dog Days is getting a Blu-ray + DVD + Digital release on November 20th. Don’t discount this little feel-good comedy that went largely unnoticed in theaters earlier this year despite its crowd-pleasing message and all those four-legged friends with sloppy tongues. {googleads}
Rounding out the films debuting for home theaters is the science fiction, road trip, family drama film called Kin which is getting a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital Copy release from Lionsgate as well as a Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy release, both of which come with commentaries, making-of doc shorts (with commentary), deleted scenes, and an hour-long round table discussion with the film’s makers.
Several catalog titles are also getting our attention this week with Stanley Kubrick's science-fiction drama 2001: A Space Odyssey leading the way with a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital HD Steelbook release that features a new 4K scan. This is a great release folks and an easy day one purchase for collector’s but sadly, you’ll only be able to buy this from Best Buy stores as it it a Best Buy exclusive.
Next up is the gut-wrenching thriller Candyman which gets a two-disc Collector’s Edition that includes a NEW 2K restoration from original negatives (of the theatrical cut and the uncut version) AND the New 2K scan Of The Original Negative With High Definition Inserts For The Uncut Footage From An Archival Film Print. In addition, the set is limited to just 2000 copies, so place your pre-orders now.
Criterion steps up big-time this week with several films getting the loving Criterion blu-ray treatment. Billy Wilder’s Marilyn Monroe comedy Some Like it Hot is on our list with the film getting a new 4K remaster which was completed by Park Circus in collaboration with MGM and Criterion. The release also features a whole slew of features with interviews (one from Norma Jean herself), a trio of behind-the-scenes featureless, a commentary, a trailer and an illustrated leaflet featuring an essay by author Sam Wasson, as well as technical credits.
Criterion keeps our “most wanted” ball rolling with its Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema Collector’s Edition Box Set which contains 30 discs and over 4000 minutes representing the most comprehensive collection of Bergman's work ever released on home video. The region-free release contains 39 movies with 41 cuts. This is a truly special release for film historians and blu-ray lovers alike. {googleads}
Billy “The Kid” and his gang are back when Young Guns II hits blu-ray for the very first time while Jamie Banks’ psychological slasher Urban Legend and its sequel John Ottman’s Urban Legends: Final Cut hit blu-ray thanks to Scream Factory’s release of both films with tons of extra features including new audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, gag reel, and more. Also, there is nothing wrong with your television set as Kino Lorber releases the four disc set of all 17 episodes of the 1964-1965 television series, The Outer Limits with a Outer Limits: Season Two blu-ray box set. The five disc set comes from a brand new remaster and tons of extra features including alternate cuts, audio commentaries, promos, interviews, TV Spots and more.
And lastly, leave it to the good folks over at Vinegar Syndrome to give us our Most Wanted Blu-ray this week. The company recently revealed that it has completed a new 4K restoration of Rospo Pallenberg’s star-studded slasher Cutting Class that stars a young Brad Pitt. The big news here is that 30th anniversary blu-ray will contain the unrated, uncut version of the film. Says Vinegar Syndrome,
