Embracing the magic of childhood, The Secret Kingdom - written and directed by Matt Drummond - takes audiences on a wondrous journey to a land of enchantment as two kids discover a world hidden beneath their bedroom floor. The film is vivid in its use of imagination and absolutely charms its audience with a bewitching spell of timeless magic as new worlds are discovered, friendships forged, and prophecies fulfilled.
Gorgeously shot, full of great CGI environments, and well-acted by all participants, this family film invites audiences back to the era of magical creatures and an evil which must be destroyed by children prophesied to do just that. The solidly rendered creatures are first seen in the shadows and out of the corners of the kids’ eye, but soon make themselves fully known to Peter and Verity, the two children at the center of this spectacular tale, find themselves traveling beneath their floorbeds!
Starring Sam Everingham, Alyla Browne, Alice Parkinson, Chris Gabardi, Darius Williams, and Beth Champion, The Secret Kingdom, which reminds me a lot of the fun found in Labyrinth, finds these two kids up against an ancient evil known as The Shroud, an evil which is born from the disunity of the worlds in the secret universe below their bedroom floor. It is their job to bring together the five mystical treasures in an effort to save this kingdom.
Their journey to The Secret Kingdom is not an easy one, but the FX are keenly in place as armadillo-like creatures guide them from their fall to a safe space far beyond the reach of The Shroud. These creatures look all sorts of frightening in their armor, but - as they can talk and are eventually understood by the children - provide them with all the explanations they need to understand their purpose in The Secret Kingdom: to reset time itself.
As they embark on their quest to unite five mystical treasures and save the Kingdom, Peter and Verity must face epic challenges that will test their bravery to the limit. Full of fun visuals, a solid attitude when it comes to the spirit of the film, and plenty of fun moments between the creatures and the children, The Secret Kingdom is fantasy at its friendliest.
