When heart and horror come together, you know man’s best friend is involved . . . and I am not talking about the cameo from horror favorite Larry Fessenden (MaXXXine) either. Good Boy is a unique take on the traditional horror narrative as it is told entirely through the dog’s point of view.
And it works. Completely.
If the opening few moments of Good Boy don’t get your heartrate up, you might be among the dead already. This film - flawless in its execution - is unsettling in purpose and bone-chillingly good as one loyal dog fights against the supernatural in order to protect the humans he loves the most.
With a new perspective behind the gears in this horror narrative, Good Boy absolutely nails its vibe and its purpose, bringing a new awareness to just how animals react when things go bump in the night. And, truly, the film - which is being handled by Vertigo Releasing - will shake you to the core with its take on canine conjuring.
Without giving too much away, Good Boy follows a loyal dog as he moves to a rural family home with his owner Todd, only to discover supernatural forces lurking in the shadows. As dark entities threaten his human companion, the brave pup must fight to protect the one he loves most.
Atmospheric and thought-provoking, Good Boy is a breath of fresh air for the horror genre as it shakes up the rules to the genre and opens its canvas up to include characters which are normally sidelined and part of the jump scares. Yet, here in Good Boy, the family pets are given the attention they so justly deserve with Indy taking the lead in this game changer of a horror narrative.
Directed by Ben Leonberg (The Fisherman's Wife) and produced by Kari Fischer, who are both Indy's real-life humans, Good Boy has already gained a devoted following. The film's cult status continues to soar among both fans and critics, and rightly so. Count me in as one of the film’s fans. In fact, the real star of the movie, Indy, has already received acclaim for his gripping performance, winning SXSW Film Festival's coveted "Howl of Fame Award".
Indy ain’t Cujo but Good Boy still manages to shake things up for the horror genre. This is all rather exciting, too. When was the last time we had a unique and darkly haunting new horror film? It’s been awhile. Maybe not since Violent Nature?
Vertigo Releasing is paw-sitively excited to announce that the highly anticipated new horror, Good Boy, will be coming to UK & Irish cinemas from 10th October.
