Anyone Home?

Suburbia?  More like disturbia!  Sometimes that American Dream that we all chase can become a living, breathing nightmare.  Don’t believe me? Just watch the social criticism that is the backbone of first time director Patrick Cunningham’s new independent horror film, Anyone Home?, now on VOD.

"Thick with trippy visuals and a Twin Peaks-soaked atmosphere, this thriller packs a hard-hitting punch right in the gut"

The terror on the screen here is deeply psychological and intense and, thanks to its domestic situation as one single mother struggles to keep up with the Joneses due to her own fantasies, it all comes home to roost in a completely satisfying and unsettling manner.

Co-written with William Day Frank, Cunningham’s movie explores the fear that resides in desolation as actresses Monique Gabriela Curnen (The Dark Knight) and Kathy Baker (Picket Fences), alongside actors Luke Ganalon (Grey’s Anatomy) and Jon Jon Briones (Sons of Anarchy), give charged performances that echo out into the sand dunes of mental illness as one woman goes for broke in living the life she sees in magazines. {googleads}

Anyone Home? (also known as Modern Home) is a psychological thriller that is unlike most horror releases on the VOD market.  The pressure placed on one single mother, who is living in an unsold model home that is nestled in a tiny desert town and is expected to keep it ready for show at all times, is unending and impacts her own son.  Jaime (Ganalon), tragically enough, has to monitor her own prescriptions for her bi-polar disorder when he is not tracking down a lone dog in the wilderness or playing with whatever he finds tossed aside in the vacant development.

Times are hard for both of them.  Add to that the dangers lurking on the outskirts of town, thanks to the focused fetish charge of an RV-dwelling strange character played by Jasper Cole (American Horror Story) and you have a recipe for horror . . . except this new breed of horror comes from some unexpected places.  That’s how exclusionary the American Dream is - especially for minorities.

As the movie opens, Camila (Curnen), is just barely keeping it together.  She takes her meds in private so that her boss (Baker), who is already barking orders at her to take out the trash in the model home she’s hired to live and work in, will give her some distance in her new job and her home.  Homeownership is a big part of the American Dream, after all, yet feeling secure in the place where you lay your head is an entirely different matter altogether.  Anyone Home?

And, alongside some disturbing images from Cunningham’s own camera, Camila simply snaps inside a reclusive suburbia that is not yet even begun.  From some powerful hallucinations to the epic surrealism captured thanks to the desert location, she can’t deal with the pressure and begins throwing up the pills, diving headfirst into a pretend life that is counter to the one she’s already struggling to be involved in.

Thick with trippy visuals and a Twin Peaks-soaked atmosphere, this thriller packs a hard-hitting punch right in the gut as it extends its reach right to your very own door.  Anyone Home? is now on VOD and Digital HD by Gravitas Ventures
