Hereditary - Blu-ray

5 beers

Hereditary is a movie about secrets and dysfunction as one family’s murky past becomes future tense.  Borne from a tragedy, the film turns into unstoppable nightmare fairly quickly. The faint of heart will shield their eyes as shadows manifest into ghosts and lights flicker indicating a supernatural presence.  But this is a bold film.  It is also unique in its unrelenting commitment to what might seem unnatural in another film as a truth about one family is revealed.

"quite effective and will continue to survive through word of mouth."

Unnerving until the very end, all alarms are sounded early as, in a key sequence outside of a public school, Charlie (Milly Shapiro) the strange daughter of Annie (Toni Collette) and Steve (Gabriel Byrne), cuts the head off of a dead bird and then makes a small, twisted figure out of it.  If you aren’t creeped out by her arc, then you soul may already be lost to the black forces that absolutely consume this movie.

Demonic mythology.  That is the unsettling territory of Hereditary and, thanks to a very haunting atmosphere, it is a movie that will stay with you for days.  There is a reason the film was screened with audience members wearing heart monitors. Seriously.  You know the film is headed south, you just can’t yet connect the dots. Repeat viewings will help as Annie and Steve’s other child, 16-year-old Peter (Alex Wolff), descends (or is it ascends?) into something truly fascinating. {googleads}

Written and directed by Ari Aster (The Strange Thing About The Johnsons), Hereditary is this year’s The Witch.  While it feels inspired by say Carrie and Rosemary’s Baby, this horror film goes above and beyond those films with its aesthetic (shot to make the interiors look like one big dollhouse) and its atmosphere.  Throw in the demonic spook show, some séances, and the moments of doubt as sanity is questioned and you have the makings for an unforgettable experience.

There is little wonder in my mind as to how this A24 film made money. Hereditary is quite effective and will continue to survive through word of mouth.  Relationships are tested throughout as a husband doubts his wife’s sanity and a wife tries to stop what she’s started. Thing is, the events are already out of their hands. Free will has no place here. None.Hereditary - Blu-ray

And the tragedy, beginning with the death of a grandmother, extends to the kids.  Your mouth will fall open as you witness the atmospheric shocks of lives ending (AND HOW?!?!). Flies will gather there, too. Because the shock here is unending and it is all by design. How Greek is that?

Pay close attention to the details. You will see the truth as these people become mere game pieces in our eyes. There is a reason that Annie creates dollhouse interiors.  She’s living in a world with no rules and she thinks she controls it.  She does not.  You will learn that quickly.  Listen to her sobs.  Their depth is speaking of her own frustration.

Welcome to the Dollhouse.  King Paimon hopes you enjoy your stay.

The complexity and visual richness of Lionsgate's release of Hereditary on blu-ray is not to be missed. The film is especially engaging with fine details noticeable in fabrics and faces. There is an explicit fear of the dark throughout the AVC encoded 1080p transfer (presented in 2.00:1) and it is explored with deep blacks that never lose their depth or their edges. Blues and greys are the primary colors due to the subdued color scheme but when there is a hint of red, the transfer absolutely pops with gorgeous replication. The sound is brilliantly unleashed in a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 presentation that never surrenders and manages to pull off quite a bit of immersive scares.
