With Tom Cruise fighting ultimate evil in the latest trailer for this Summer’s highly anticipated reboot of The Mummy, we get our first look into what Universal has planned for the revival of its engorged library of monster movies.
The idea is that the studio will revisit the mythology of its classic Universal monsters but place them in a modern-day setting. And first to emerge from the cocoon of that mythology will be The Mummy with Transformers producer Alex Kurtzman at the helm.
It’s yet to be seen how faithfully (and/or effectively) such Universal classics as The Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, and others will be treated, but after our second look at The Mummy, it’s clear that true, classic horror will take a back seat.
While this latest trailer certainly harbors a few spooky moments, namely an effectively creepy under water sequence as Queen Ahmanet pops up from beneath the water’s surface, it appears Universal will load their treatments with plenty of fast-paced action, bone-breaking stunts, and budget-busting CGI. The summer crowd certainly wants a fun time at the movies so maybe Universal have it right. Time will tell.
