40 years after bursting onto the scene, Michael Myers returns to Haddonfield as Halloween slays the competition on its way to the top of the box office.
The film rode the current horror revival wave to bring in a whopping $77.5 million at this past weekend's box office. That was enough to set all kinds of records including the biggest October opening ever with $33.3 million on Friday, biggest horror opening with a female lead, biggest movie opening with a female lead over 55, second biggest October opening ever, and biggest Halloween opening ever. It was all enough for Jamie Lee Curtis to boast a bit on her twitter feed which she followed with the #WomenGetThingsDone hashtag. Like a boss!
Halloween's opening pretty much lapped the field as A Star is Born came in second with just over $19 million to bring its U.S. total to $126 million, and the Marvel villain offshoot Venom was knocked from the top perch and finished third for the weekend running with an $18 million take to bring its total to just over $171 million. {googleads}
Rounding out the top five were the family-friend Halloween movie Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween at four with $9.7 million while First Man dropped two spots this weekend to come in at five with $8.5 million.
The race-relations drama The Hate U Give tops the next set of five by moving up four slots with a $7.5 million take followed by the family-friendly animated Smallfoot, which drops two slots to finish in seventh with $6.6 million to bring its total to an impressive $66 million.
The Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish comedy Night School took in $5 million, followed by Bad Times at the El Royale at $3.3 million, and The Old Man and the Gun which rounds out the top ten with just over $2 million.
