Late Night With the Devil (2023)

It’s where broadcast demons meet the wrath of polyester!

In a highlight scene, we are midway through the Halloween special, and Jack Delroy’s ratings stunt is in full swing. He’s got a psychic who looks like she moonlights as a disco DJ, a parapsychologist with the charisma of a tax auditor, and Lilly—the young girl allegedly possessed by a demon—sitting quietly like she’s waiting for her juice box. The audience is half-bored, half-buzzed, and Jack’s sweating like he’s hosting The Gong Show during a heatwave.

Then the psychic starts channeling spirits, and Lilly casually drops a voice that sounds like Satan gargling gravel. The camera zooms in, the lights flicker, and the parapsychologist tries to maintain composure while clearly rethinking his life choices. Jack, ever the pro, leans in with a “Tell us more, Lilly,” like he’s interviewing a guest about their new cookbook instead of a demonic entity.

"a deliciously deranged horror throwback"

Suddenly, the studio plants start dying, the psychic starts convulsing, and the demon starts monologuing like it’s auditioning for Inside the Actor’s Studio. The audience is frozen, the crew is panicking, and Jack’s still trying to steer the show like it’s just another Tuesday. It’s peak horror absurdity: chaos wrapped in corduroy, broadcast live with no commercial break.

Late Night with the Devil is a deliciously deranged horror throwback that asks: what if a 1977 late-night talk show accidentally summoned Satan live on air? The answer: chaos, corduroy, and a whole lot of cigarette smoke. Presented as a “lost episode” of the syndicated show Night Owls, the film nails its faux-broadcast format so well, you’ll swear you taped it off UHF between In Search Of and a rerun of Columbo; analog horror with a side of ashtray ambiance.

David Dastmalchian stars as Jack Delroy, a host clinging to relevance like a clip-on tie in a wind tunnel. His performance is pure sweaty charisma, channeling the desperation of every talk show host who ever booked a psychic and a parapsychologist just to goose ratings. As the Halloween special unfolds, Delroy’s guests include a young girl allegedly possessed by a demon, and things spiral faster than a rotary phone in a blender. The tension builds with every commercial break, until the show devolves into a live broadcast from hell.Late Night With the Devil (2023)

The film’s commitment to its format is its secret sauce. Shot with period-authentic cameras and layered with vintage graphics, it feels like a cursed tape you’d find in your uncle’s garage labeled “DO NOT WATCH.” The horror is slow-burn, but when it hits, it’s like flipping from The Mike Douglas Show to Faces of Death without changing the channel. There’s no wink to the audience—just a steady descent into madness that’s both hilarious and genuinely unsettling.

In the end, Late Night with the Devil is a wickedly fun genre experiment that rewards viewers who remember when TV was weird, unpredictable, and occasionally possessed. It’s not just a horror film—it’s a time capsule of televised chaos, lovingly restored and gleefully corrupted. For horror fans, it’s like watching your childhood nightmares get syndicated. And honestly? That’s must-see TV.

This one’s for the horror heads who miss the tactile weirdness of late-night TV and the Gen Xers who remember when Satanic Panic was just another Tuesday. File it next to Ghostwatch, Deadstream, and your bootleg copy of The Day After.

It’s Halloween night, 1977. Jack Delroy, host of the syndicated talk show Night Owls, is desperate to boost ratings—and what better way than a live séance with a possessed child, a psychic, and a parapsychologist? What could possibly go wrong?

Presented as a “lost episode” of late-night television, Late Night with the Devil is a devilishly clever descent into analog horror, complete with vintage commercials, polyester suits, and enough cigarette smoke to summon Beelzebub himself. As the cameras roll and the guests unravel, the show spirals into a live broadcast from hell.  Starring David Dastmalchian in a career-defining meltdown and directed by the Cairnes brothers (100 Bloody Acres), this retro horror gem is Ghostwatch meets Network—with a dash of The Exorcist and a wink to our nightmares.
