Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter One

It goes without saying that Kevin Costner knows his way around a western - both in front of, and behind the camera. In fact, it’s difficult to propose any other living actor as closely connected to the genre. Dances With Wolves, Wyatt Earp, Open Range, and TV’s “Yellowstone,” just to name a few, prove the man has found his passion and knows how to share it.

His latest, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is the culmination of that fascination with the genre some 40-odd years in the making. And with two more, and possibly a third additional installment in the pipeline, it’s time we saddle up and prepare for a ride into the history books. And if we aren’t careful, we just might learn something new about the hardships of those who sought a better life out west.

"saddle up and prepare for a ride into the history books"

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is an extraordinary exploration of the untamed American frontier that takes us on an unforgettable journey through the complexities of the Old West, deftly weaving together tales of survival, cultural clashes, and the relentless pursuit of a better life.

The story, from Costner and co-writer Jon Baird, set during the years of the American Civil War, dives deep into the multifaceted nature of the American West, far from the simplistic portrayals often seen in Westerns. The film underscores how early settlers, driven by dreams and desperation, ventured westward, bringing with them a mix of histories—both noble and unworthy. The West was a land of opportunity but also one of intense conflict, particularly between settlers and the indigenous peoples whose land was being encroached upon.

Costner does an exceptional job of portraying this complexity. He brings to the screen the harsh realities of life during that era, where settlers were caught between the promise of new beginnings and the brutal reality of displacing native cultures. The narrative is both a celebration of the pioneering spirit and a somber acknowledgment of the cost at which the American West was "won."

Sienna Miller (American Sniper) delivers a standout performance as Frances, who epitomizes the resilience and fortitude required to survive in such an unforgiving environment. The film’s opening scenes are particularly harrowing, as Frances loses her husband and son in a massacre that sets the tone for her arduous journey ahead. With her remaining daughter Elizabeth (Georgia MacPhail) by her side, Miller's portrayal of grief, determination, and maternal strength is nothing short of riveting. She is complemented by a strong supporting cast, including Sam Worthington, Tatanka Means, Jenna Malone, Giovani Ribisi, and Owen Crow Shoe, each bringing their own depth to the story.Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter One

Particularly memorable is the opening scene, which sets a grim tone for the struggles and violence that follow. The savagery and brutality depicted are gut-wrenching, effectively conveying the perilous reality of the frontier. This stuff is real, it’s brutal, heartbreaking, and definitely not for the faint of heart.

Additionally, the breathtaking Moab, Utah landscapes serve as a powerful backdrop to the story. Costner’s direction captures the majestic beauty of the American West, with sweeping vistas and symbolic imagery that evoke the spirit of independence and adventure. These visual elements are not just eye candy; they are integral to the storytelling, reinforcing the themes of conquest and survival.

Costner also excels in building a mythology around the Old West, infusing the narrative with historical and cultural references that enrich the viewing experience. The landscapes, combined with the film's soaring score, create an immersive atmosphere that transports us back in time.

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is a poignant and powerful film that offers a nuanced portrayal of the American West. It strikes a delicate balance between celebrating the pioneering spirit and acknowledging the darker aspects of Western expansion. Yes, it is three hours long (and sometimes feels it) and there's a lot of setup, but with its compelling performances and stunning cinematography, it is is a must-watch for anyone interested in this pivotal chapter of American history.

Kevin Costner has crafted a cinematic experience that is as thought-provoking as it is visually stunning. Horizon is not just a movie; as its title states, it is a saga that invites us to reflect on the complexities of history and the enduring human spirit.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment bring us Kevin Costner's sweeping American western to home video with its single disc 4K UltraHD + Digital Code edition of Horizon: An American Saga. The package features the film on a single disc, and a digital redemption card. Sadly missing are the handful of bonus featurettes which accompany the blu-ray.

Though the transfer and sound are both top-notch, the glaring omission here is the lack of a blu-ray disc in the single-hubbed case housed within a cardboard slipcover. If you want the blu-ray, you'll have to buy it separately. However, buying the blu-ray will get you the bonus materials, so at least there's that.

VIDEO

The 2160p, 1.85:1 HDR10 picture is absolutely spectacular as it features vast, wide open landscapes of the colorful American West. Details are sharp and crisp, with the finest details in the actors' clothing becoming perfectly visible. Even the tiny hairs and minute details of the occasional fly or bug making cameo appearances are impressively rendered.

As expected, it's a dusty and dirty film so there's a lot of haze and smoke obscuring the picture throughout, but when the smoke clears you'll be impressed with the sharpness and clarity of the details. Pay close attention to intricacy of the attire and costumes worn by the film's indigenous peoples. Very impressive!

It's a shame Costner didn't shoot in 2.35 scope as this is the perfect film to take advantage of the wider frame. But as it is, there is very little to complain about. Really oesn't get much better that it is handled here.

AUDIO

Included on the disc are English language Dolby Atmos, Dolby True HD 7.1, and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. There are also 5.1 Dolby tracks in French, Italian, and Spanish languages.

The Dolby Atmos track is a real winner here as it utilizes the full surround spectrum at various times during the film. Gunshots, arrows, and horses zip across the room while birds and other atmospherics emanate from above frequently. Crank it up when the cavalry rides into town! You'll feel right in the middle of the action.

Very disappointing is the absence of bonus material. We were looking forward to hearing Costner talk about the future of the saga in one of the items which is only included on the Blu-ray Disc.
