The Best Films of 2017
As yet another movie season draws to a close, it's time to not only shake or heads in disbelief at the year's disastrous box office totals, but also time to take a fond look back at the list of the best movies 2017 had to offer.
Superheroes continued to dominate the Hollywood landscape in 2017 while super-sized pigs, Netflix, warring apes, and a movie that had us yelling "Get Out' at the screen made significant splashes as well. 2017 was undoubtedly the year of the woman as the top three box office busters featured either princesses, former princesses, or great female warriors with Beauty and the Beast, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Wonder Woman holding the top three spots respectively with a combined $4.1 billion in worldwide box office grosses, a significant decrease over last year's totals.
While everyone else was busy throwing their hard earn clams to the big three, we here at Reel Reviews were spending our time with some other films.
This isn't a list of our picks for Oscar consideration (nor are they the ones we hope will win) but rather a list of the ten movies that blew our skirts up in 2017. Enjoy!

10. Mudbound
Reminds us that in a world overwhelmingly stacked against us, we can emerge with grace, dignity, and overwhelming perseverance.
9. War for the Planet of the Apes
With nods to Vietnam and now-classic films about war, War for the Planet of the Apes is both compelling and intelligent. It is also fully aware of itself and what it needs to do as the final piece of Caesar’s legacy.
8. Baby Driver
Never before have the loves of speed and killer tunes come together so magically as they do in filmmaker Edgar Wright’s latest, a genre-crossing masterpiece with music on the brain and burnt rubber in its soul.
7. Wind River
Its richly-layered underpinnings have plenty of sobering things to say about the endless plight and ongoing struggles of some of America’s most mistreated people.
6. Lady Bird
We’ve all experienced Lady Bird. After all, this is our story, as comfortable as an old pair of worn-out leather slippers. Step in and relive your own personal journey.
5. Dunkirk
A triumphant feat of heart-pounding filmmaking that plunges us deep into the middle of war action and brings a refreshing unconventionality to the war movie genre in a way we’ve never before experienced.
And now I need a friend’s pinky on which to swear upon. The Disaster Artist has inspired me. Oh. Hi, Mark.
3. The Florida Project
Set over one summer, the film follows precocious six-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her ragtag playmates and bonds with her rebellious but caring mother, all while living in the shadows of Disney World.
A modern fairy tale for adults but, buried within all that fantasy, is a surfaced tale about deception, spies, and the certainty that we all should bare witness to in this cruel, cruel world: sometimes a happy ending is a must.
1. Get Out
Whether you want to call it a comedy, a horror, or a speculative thriller, the effect this thing will leave on you can’t be denied.
Of course, what would a "best-of" list be without a reciprocal look at the worst 2017 had to offer. The grand prize for the biggest stinker of the year goes to (drum roll, please) ...
