Well, that didn't take long!

In case you didn't know, the copyright for one of Disney's most beloved characters, Steamboat Willie (the precursor to Mickey Mouse), expired at the end of 2023. And at 12:01 am on January 1, 2024, the first trailer for a slasher horror film called Mickey's Mouse Trap hit the interwebs. And you can check it out below.

That's right. The mouse is out... and Mickey, er, Willy has gone mad and is on a killing rampage at a local theme park. Seems that a group of kids decide to surprise their friend, Alex, on her birthday, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse has plans for his own tricks.

The film is written by Simon Phillips (Survive the Game), directed by Jamie Bailey (Deinfluencer), and stars Simon Phillips, Nick Biskupek, and James Laurin.

It's worth pointing out that the copyright for Mickey Mouse did not expire. Only for Steamboat Willie which was first published 95 years ago. Don't get any ideas about seeing the current version of Mickey Mouse slashing his way to the big screen any time soon, however, as you can expect Disney to fight tooth and nail to hold onto that one. In addition, there are limitations to using the characters even after the copyrights have expired.
