Considering all the controversy leading up to the 91st Oscars presentation, things weren't quite the train wreck we were all expecting.
In addition to Kevin Hart's sudden backing out, leaving the presentation without a host, the show's producers quickly abandoned the ideas of shortening the broadcast by moving some of the awards presentations to the commercial breaks. Then came the announcement of only allowing select songs to be performed live on stage. Considering all that drama, things actually went down rather swimmingly with a couple of surprises, some lovely acceptance speeches, and the highlight of the entire presentation – Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's moving rendition of Shallow.
Olivia Colman's acceptance speech was certainly a high moment, and Bryan Singer's awkward absence from any of the Bohemian Rhapsody acceptance speeches was undoubtedly a low. But the much-welcomed return to the broadcast of full 20-second film clips for each of the acting nominees as well as Javier Bardem presenting the Best Foreign Language Film in his native Spanish Language brought a bit of class to the presentation. Things really couldn't have gone any smoother.
