J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production arm steps into the military/zombie genre (yes, that's a thing) when a new film called Overlord hits theaters later this year on October 26th.

The first footage debuted at this year's ComicCon where Abrams denied that the film is a Cloverfield sequel as was previously reported by many outlets. Regardless, it looks to be a fairly solid stand-alone effort even without ties to the Cloverfield universe. And AC/DC blaring over the beginning? A stroke of genius.{googleads}

The trailer starts off like a typical war movie with some incredible footage that follows a planeload of paratroopers preparing to be dropped into France at the beginning of Operation Overlord during World War II. Then all hell breaks loose as bullets rip the plane apart forcing a quick airborne evacuation of everyone onboard.

As the soldiers hit the ground, things immediately turn batshit crazy – as Abrams described it – and the film turns into a full-blown zombie flick when the paratroopers land behind enemy lines and discover that their new enemy is some kind of zombie-like creature.

Seems that the Nazis have been performing experiments – injecting captive soldiers with a red liquid – that turns regular humans into what they call a "thousand-year army." From there on out, it's a war to eradicate the zombies with whatever means possible. And that entails all kinds of badass military weapons including a flamethrower that wipes out dozens of the flesh-eating creatures at a time.

The film is directed by Julius Avery from a script by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith and stars Wyatt Russell, Bokeem Woodbine, Pilou Asbæk among others. Paramount must have a lot of confidence in the film as it releases right about the same time that studios begin to roll out their Oscar fare into theaters. From the looks of it, things are indeed about to get batshit crazy.

As expected, Overlord has been rated R by the MPAA for strong bloody violence, disturbing images, language, and brief sexual content. This will be Bad Robot's very first R rated film.

Overlord will land in theaters this fall on October 26th.
