One of the most haunting scenes, three young adults with plastic bags over their head, just waiting to the be resuscitated appears toward the middle part of Pet Graveyard. The poor girl left alive by this reckless experiment will have to revive all of them within a set amount of time. It is a harrowing scene for her and for us, causing all sorts of tension as these souls must be pulled back from the Other Side or be trapped there forever.
Welcome to Pet Graveyard, a new supernatural thriller from Proportion Productions and Millman Productions. The entrance may be free, but it will still cost dearly in the long run because you can’t cheat death. Even if you decide, like the reckless daredevils in this movie, to challenge Death to a game, you just can’t win it - EVER. This is the twisted territory of the smartly-made (but poorly-named) Pet Graveyard.
Look, I know what the title of this new horror film is trying to do for fans of Stephen King – especially of ANYONE anticipating the new Pet Sematary movie – but, man, this thriller about what happens when four people dare to explore “brinking” and cross over to the other side momentarily is soooo much better than its copycat title gives it credit for.
Quite literally, that’s my only beef with Pet Graveyard, the new horror film from Uncork’d Entertainment.
With that out of the way, the directorial debut of Rebecca J. Matthews (producer of Mother Krampus), is quite well done. It is dark and moody, expressing fear in some of the quietest of moments as these young adults cross paths with the Grim Reaper himself and his wicked little red-eyed cat. {googleads}
The film opens with a seemingly unrelated event, a woman and a man pulling into an auto shop needing immediate help, but the situation expands to include a dark figure stabbing them and taking them down into the abyss that is, in this film, the realm of the dead. It is an immediately threatening situation and perfectly sets up the paranoia to follow as the “brinking” experiment leads to some unforeseen consequences.
Starring Jessica O'Toole, David Cotter, Rita Siddiqui, Hindolo Koroma, Kate Milner-Evans, Georgina Jane, T'Jean Uter-Dinh, and Hattie Willow, Pet Graveyard is written by Suze Spade and is thankfully free of a lot of stock-issued jump scares. We don’t have random cats dropping from the sky or leaping out at us from dark corners. What we do have is a concentrated effort to keep the tone as moody as the subject matter.
The living should probably never attempt to contact the dead, no matter how recent their departure. These young fools believe they can say goodbye to their loved ones and drift back into the land of the living without attachment. They are wrong and when the stone-faced Grim Reaper starts appearing, along with the spirits of the people they wanted to see when they crossed over, starts appearing in their world, well, Hell will follow.
Pet Graveyard is being distributed worldwide by Uncork’d Entertainment and is set for DVD and Digital VOD release on April 5th of this year.
