Opening in a small town at a coffee shop, Aged settles into a quiet stride but slowly builds the tension as one young woman, taking a temporary job as a caregiver, quickly realizes that her employer and the house she is staying in, both have a dark and dangerous past.
Written and directed by Anubys Lopez (Those Who Call), is a rural horror/thriller that knows its audience, providing some interesting aerial drone shots as Veronica (Morgan Boss-Maltais) rides along to her destination, Mr. Bloom’s house. The pace rolls out like a fever dream of patience and paranoia and creates a solid tension between the idyllic location, vast in its remoteness, and the claustrophobic terror which will soon entrap her.
Charles (Dave McClain) comes across as genuine, but he needs serious help with his wheelchair-bound Mrs. Bloom (Carla Kidd), who also seems earnest in her helplessness. After a meet and greet, where they discuss her background, she’s in like flint and the opportunity is hers, but she’s going to need a change of clothes . . . something more modest. Veronica is charmed and amused by the notion and takes it in stride. She’s here to help and Mrs. Bloom would absolutely LOVE to have Veronica there indefinitely . . . with no cell service.
Welcome to the boonies, Miss Grey! Getting the creeped out vibes yet? No? Well, you definitely will as Veronica tries to unpack, relax, and settle in, but she cannot thanks to the mysteries which reveal themselves to her.
This is a languid film, a slowly-paced paranoid thriller that puts its protagonist through all sorts of Hell before revealing the truth with an unsettling ending that will leave your mouth gaping open.
With the mood cranked low and atmospheric, Aged proves to be a slow burn of creeping paranoia as Veronica finds herself trapped in a house of shadows and strangers. The woods surrounding it are full of terror, too. There is literally no escape for her and the low-key performances only amplify the tension in this situation of extremes.
The camera moves slowly around the creaking house and this constant motion draws you in as Veronica realizes there is no escape from the terror she’s agreed to be a part of. People seem to just disappear and reappear in this house. It’s an unsettling feeling which never ends - especially for Veronica, who just wants to be free from the spell of the house and The Bloom family.
Co-starring Bria D'Aguanno, Adonis Ringo, Kelly Kidd, Lisa Alavi, and Kristin Henderson, Aged will be released on digital platforms June 15 from Filmdom.
