Weekends are made for this. Good friends. Good food. And taking a break from the modern world. For four good friends, the trip Between the Trees; however, presents something a bit more terrifying. Remote areas are not good places to suddenly need assistance. The poor schmucks are about to learn exactly that.
On two fronts, director Brad Douglas (Besetment) gives audiences this March more reasons to peer suspiciously into the woods so deep and so dark. There are things out there; things we don’t really want to get to know and yet that’s EXACTLY what happens in this unsettling and wholly satisfying 74-minute excursion into the trees. Embracing the darkness around them, without adequate preparation, makes for one unforgettable vacation.
This new thriller begins with an insight into a failing marriage. Steve (Greg James, Grimm), in an attempt to get away from the usual marital “bliss”, invites his three best buds - Mack (Jonny Lee, Hawaii Five-O), Dave (Dan Kyle), and Josh (Michael Draper) – on a trip outside of the city. They are quick to hop onboard; all of them know something about his problems. Keep that in mind.
The four dudes head to a sawdust dive just outside of the city limits and, within minutes of arriving, are nearly in a fistfight with the locals. Cue the Hank Williams Jr. tunes! Already, something is off with Steve. We see it. But do his friends?
It was a supposed to be a weekend of fun. But, once in the cabin, it is clear that fun is the last thing that is going to happen. The poker cards come out. The cigars do, too. Unfortunately, there are some big ass footprints that keep popping up around the cabin and their vehicle. And then the accidents start piling up. A hunting trip ends in a death as Steve and his remaining friends discover that there is someone or something hunting them. {googleads}
But Steve has his own secrets that he is hoarding and, once revealed, these men realize that they have much more to be concerned about then the possibility of inbred mutants hunting them down. This is when the script by Sam Klarreich really takes off. The twist in the plot comes early and it is shot in such a way to throw us off its scent. We get that Steve is unstable. He has good reason to be. But, well, secrets make horrible friends.
And they are all out there alone. There’s tension at almost every turn as the hunted attempt to turn the tables on the things that keep picking them off.
Much like the thrills in Wrong Turn, Between the Trees feels clichéd until it digs in, spins its wheels, and gives us some unexpected thrills as it peels out and heads toward Gonzo Land. Yes, there is something out there taking these men out – think The Hills Have Eyes – but what unfolds, especially when supporting characters lead the charge against the threats, is violent, unexpected, and wholly satisfying – especially for those of us who like shocking endings.
