Though Cavill isn't a complete unknown, (and despite the somewhat lusterless name of "Henry") he definitely fits the bill for what Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan were reportedly looking for: a 30-something"ish" relative unknown actor with some TV experience.

Here's what director Zack Snyder had to say about their new Superman:

"In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield."

Cavill, is mostly known for his portrayal of Charles Brandon on Showtime's The Tudors, and just wrapped production on The Cold Light of Day and stars in the upcoming Immortals opening this fall.

Briton Cavill, now completes the UK triumvirate of british actors portraying three of the most popular American superheroes: Christian Bale as Batman, Andrew Garfield and Spider-man, and now Henry Cavill as Superman.
