There's Nothing Out There! (1991) - Blu-ray

“Is this the camp by the lake?”

“No.  This is the house by the pond.”

Hilarious.  Kids born to be murder victims.  That’s merely one of the great lines in the super-soaked B-movie classic from 1991, right before the decade started to drown itself in plaid and combat boots.  Shot to be fun and re-watched thanks to its VHS-references, There’s Nothing Out There! has survived the threat of VHS obscurity thanks to the fine efforts of Vinegar Syndrome in this its Blu-ray debut.

"always, always, always, rewatchable, the movie is a blast of goop and boobs from beginning to its loopy finale"

Writer/director Rolfe Kanefsky (My Family Treasure, Pretty Cool), who was all of 19 when he directed the totally AWESOME There’s Nothing Out There! is all sorts of cool in my bookFull of Freaks and Geeks, this horror spoof is an unheralded genius of the genre.  No one recognizes this nowadays, though.  But one viewing of his debut will change all that.  Here, he takes on the horror genre and serves it an offering that is much better than Scream ever could.

Hopefully, thanks to Vinegar Syndrome’s brand-new 2K transfer from the original 35mm negative, the release of There’s Nothing Out There! on blu-ray will change Kanefsky’s notoriety. {googleads}

In a nutshell, this is a movie about an amphibian-looking alien who, after attacking a woman in a video store (with great movie title placements), awakens a lust for the female form and, after hunting for a couple of days, stumbles upon a group of dumbass teenagers in the woods on a retreat from all responsibilities.  Fornication and fun is all they have on their minds.  And this alien is all hopped up to help them with one of those things.

Starring Craig Peck, Wendy Bednarz, and Mark Collver, There’s Nothing Out There! is a horror fan’s wet dream.  Funny, intelligent, and always, always, always, rewatchable, the movie is a blast of goop and boobs from beginning to its loopy finale.  The film is also full of great tunes and awesome energy, totally coming alive when the smartass of the group, Mike (who knows full well about what to expect in these isolated areas), realizes he is all alone in the house.  There's Nothing Out There! (1991) - Blu-ray One by one, the alien takes out the men and has its ways with the women.  By air, by land, or by sea, nothing will stop this greenalien from mating with the women.  Nothing.  Not even Kanefsky’s direction as he takes us room by room where all the couples are sleeping.  With interesting POVs throughout, There’s Nothing Out There! remains WILD and INSPIRED entertainment.

Glowing green eyes and an appetite for topless women, the disgusting green slimy thing at the center of There’s Nothing Out There! really wants you to buy this release.  Do it NOW.

Mike is always getting in the way of fun. His obsession with horror movies and their rules dictates that no matter where he goes, he can’t help but expect to find a monster lurking around every corner. But this time, his paranoia might be justified…

After being invited to a remote lodge, along with some friends, Mike immediately begins to sense that something isn’t right, but none of his friends believe him. Unfortunately, they’re dead wrong, and a slimy alien frog monster has indeed landed in the nearby woods and set out to fulfill it’s mission of killing all human males and mating with females. Can Mike convince his friends that there IS something out there, before the men have their brains sucked out and the women are carrying green mutant fetuses?

Vinegar Syndrome presents this newly scanned and restored 2K presentation of There’s Nothing Out There! on blu-ray with great results.  The region free Blu-ray/DVD combo looks incredible.  Black levels are consistent and so, too, are the colors.  The new 1080p transfer is crisp with defined edges. Colors are vivid and fine details are noticeable. Skin tones are warm. Occasionally, the red tones overcompensate in some areas, but a sharp-looking release nonetheless. This was filmed in the daylight, so keep that in mind as the detail in the woods is nice.  The faithful English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track is an incredible accompaniment to the feature.
