Nipples. Why’d it have to be nipples? From the very beginning of this Italian sexploitation-cannibal flick, nipples are the target. They don’t stop being one either. Of course, that’s after a flaccid penis has been hacked off and fed to a bunch of cannibals. Nom nom nom.
One nurse, knee deep in the hoopla of crazy patients, comes running down the halls holding her left bleeding breast. A patient bit her nipple completely off. OUCH. Now, how this patient did all that is another question that the film explores. Turns out, all sorts of shade is being thrown in this nasty place. Good thing, photographer “reporter” Emanuelle (Laura Gemser) is there offering photographic proof, courtesy of a camera doll she clutches like a child, because this shit stinks.

And that’s only the beginning of this b-grade cannibal copycat. The stomach-churning “fun” gets weirder with each passing minute, but first, Emmanuel must lend a hand (job) to those in need of servicing. In bed, beside the bed, by the shore, by a bridge; Emmanuelle is there to perform her duties as a sex object. It’s a movie about cannibalism and it is surrounded by all sorts of sexcapades.
Directed by smut auteur Joe D’Amato (Beyond the Darkness, Anthropopogaus) and aimed to hitch a ride with Ruggero Deodato’s Jungle Holocaust, Emmanuelle and the Last Cannibals has a second chance at a first opinion thanks to Severin’s glorious detailed 2K scan from original vault elements. Want to watch just how chewy all the pink parts are? If so, this bloody boil is the stew for you.
The problem is that the film, offered as a solely a copycat flick, has no real reason to exist; even D’Amato’s usual frenetic choices behind the camera are missing. Instead, we have a very solemn ordeal and that, considering the gruesome topic, is probably the wrong read on tone. Its hardcore audience, wanting lots of sexy details instead of dry humping all day long, won’t make it past the penis hacking scene and its Gorehounds won’t find much of the drama anything to howl at. Therefore, the film exists in this sort of no man’s territory; like Bela Lugosi, it is without a home.
Much like the tattoos of the Amazonian tribe that eventually stalks down Emmanuelle’s group, this film is quietly made extinct by its own pacing. The film co-stars Gabriele Tinti as Professor Mark Lester, Nieves Navarro (as Susan Scott) as Maggie Mackenzie, and Donald O'Brien. Don’t worry, though, you probably won’t care for any of them. The point is that they are there and, as this is a flick about the joys of eating human flesh, will soon be devoured.

Severin’s 2K restoration and new scan is to be commended. Sure, nothing about this production looks pretty but it sure cleans up well. Having acknowledged all that, though, this release is seriously how good this film is ever going to look. Grain is high, there are scratches and pops from time to time, but the colors are pumped up and so too are the black levels. The sound, presented here in a crisp DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track, is solid enough for the lo-fi feel of the movie.

Full of interesting supplemental items, if you can’t finish the film due to its explicit content, this might be where you find the strength to soldier on. This release comes with Nico Fidenco's awesome soundtrack, though.
