Think vampire films have run their course thanks to the ruining of Twilight? Think again. In just about two minutes time, your fascination with all those magnificent blood-sucking beasts will be reigniting thanks to vignette which opens Thirst, a kick-ass tale of nocturnal vampirism from Iceland.
I won’t spoil the opening; I can’t spoil it and to speak anymore about what happens when one fella hops into another fella’s car would be a sin, so I will keep my mouth zipped shut and throw away the key. Just know, that within seconds of something else being UNzipped - as the blood hits the window - all the Horror Hounds and Gore-Gore Girls out there will be giggling.
Thirst, directed by Steinþór Hróar Steinþórsson and Gaukur Úlfars, is the adrenaline-pumping vampire epic that we’ve always wanted. Focused around Hjörtur, a thousand-year-old gay vampire, Thirst bares its fangs early and fires on all engines to create a noir-like hunt for a cryptic cult while this aged vampire and an addict are being hunted by a detective gone rogue.
Hula is arrested and charged with murdering her brother, but the evidence isn’t strong enough to keep her in jail. There are no signs of struggle in the house. The murder investigation goes nowhere quickly, but the suspicion follows her as her addiction gets the best of her, leading her to some shady parts of the town. But even her mother won’t let her stay in the warmth.
With nowhere to turn, Hula finds herself in a position where only the cold comfort of a gay vampire makes any sense at all.
Dark and atmospheric, Thirst is heavy with gore and practical effects and - because it doesn’t shirk away from some graphic content - honors viewers with material that is both heady and seedy. It all makes for a thrilling time as blood and snow mix to create a memorable take on euro-trash vampirism. This is an intense film and it is filled with steam-gutted streets where the neon lights soak in the snow as heads are split open by bare hands and penises ripped right off of trash-talking men.
Starring Hjörtur Sævar Steinason, Jens Jensson, Hulda Lind Kristinsdóttir, Ester Sveinbjarnardóttir, Birgitta Sigursteinsdóttir, and Birna Halldórsdóttir, Thirst is filled with laughter and frights as one vampire goes all steely-eyed in his pursuit of those out to do him harm.
Direct from a well-received festival run, where it played to rave reviews at ScreamFest 2020, London FrightFest and Out On Film, Thirst arrives DVD and Digital 12/1 from Uncork’d Entertainment. This is one blood-soaked tale of cold-blooded vampirism that you will definitely not want to miss.
