Door in the Woods

We are all well aware about the demons trapped in the walls of the cabin the woods. Maybe we are too aware of that supernatural spell. Used to it, you could say. Expected, as well. And, yes, the woods are often dark and dreary, so there’s no surprise there either, but what if there was the discovery of a door in the middle of those haunted woods?

"absolutely chilling and when what is behind the door starts walking the house and swiping kids again, well, you’ll be hooked, too"

Weird. With nothing in front of it and nothing behind it, it is just a door. Just the door on where once there stood a house. Suspended without reason; without purpose; the door appears to fit perfectly in a closet that was already lacking one. What would you do? Would you walk away? Could you walk away? Or would you bring it with you and use that door in the space where it fits perfectly?

Because that’s exactly what one unsuspecting family does with the discovery of the door in the woods. They bring it home with them and, yes, it fits perfectly in the space – but when no paint will stay on the door and weird things are heard from behind the door, it becomes clear that this door is something more. It is some sort of portal and it won’t let its new owners go.

Because this door has a magnetic pull to it. Something about the Door in the Woods is spellbinding; this haunted flick – even when you know where it is headed – simply will not let you go. {googleads}

And that is where writer/director Billy Chase Goforth’s atmospheric horror thriller gets its mojo. That fear – familiar and cold – that is developed is absolutely chilling and when what is behind the door starts walking the house and swiping kids again, well, you’ll be hooked, too.

With an eerie (and literary) supernatural tone that is similar to the energy of House of Leaves, the debut novel by American author Mark Z. Danielewski, Goforth’s supernatural film is all about building up suspense and internalizing terror. We get only a couple of jump scares, thanks to a camera that is steady and committed to creeping us out.

Starring John-Michael Fisher, Katherine Forbes and Lauren Harper, Door in the Woods is about what follows one family when they take a door that they find on a hike into their house and use it for its intended purpose: to keep things shut. Unfortunately, what they wind up opening – thanks to sad tragedy surrounding the door – is something unforgettable and unforgivable, jeopardizing every single member of the family.Door in the Woods

With keyed-up sequences of slow stalking terror that feel very influenced by Kubrickian, Door in the Woods tips its hat to the cinematic flairs of The Shining and attempts to one-up with the tale of a mad haunting that only a deaf shaman (Castle Rock’s CJ Jones) can exorcise. Those are lofty goals to draw parallels to, but it is earned thanks to Goforth’s patience in creating mood and his awareness of tone as this film – no matter its budget – is damned expressive when it comes to creating atmosphere and capitalizing on the vibes that are only given off by small towns and those living within its city limits.

Open at your own risk. Door in the Woods, writer/director Billy Chase Goforth’s atmospheric horror-thriller premieres on digital and DVD October 29 from Wild Eye Releasing.
