Werewolves Within

And just like that . . . a future cult classic has arrived!

Based on a Ubisoft game and featuring a wonderful cast and of solidly realized characters, Werewolves Within is the whodunnit horror/comedy of the year.  Fresh as the falling snow that has cut off the small town at the center of this killer thrill and as brisk as a walk around the park, this film serves up plenty of laughs on the way to its next victim.  But just exactly who is the clawed creature running amuck through Beaverfield?

"a blast from start to finish and should even satisfy those gorehounds out there who are solely in it for the fear and the fur to begin flying"

Sam Parker (Wayne Duvall) wants to know.  You see, Sam, being the big businessman that he is, has proposed that an oil pipeline go through the center of the town.  The citizens are divided about this prospect and have hit a sort of critical mass in being good neighbors about the whole damn thing.  Lines in the snow are being drawn and, suddenly, the progressive and conservative members of the community find themselves being hunted down by one by one.

Enter the ultra-nice forest ranger tasked with easing the building of the pipeline.  Finn Wheeler (Sam Robinson) is insanely too nice about damn near everything.  In fact, he enters the story listening to tapes about how to be a man about things.  For the ladies, his version of being too nice is a huge turn off, so he is trying to MAN UP about everything.

The results are hilarious as he comes face to face with the town’s charming postal worker, Cecily (Milana Vayntrub) - who knows all of the town’s ins and outs and all of the secrets they try to hide from their neighbors.  She even takes him to see the town’s scary recluse, Emerson Flint (Glenn Fleshler), who greets them both with guns and more guns.  Guess it pays to be the malil delivery person in Small Town, USA.  Werewolves Within

The two social misfits soon bond and, on the night the snow piles up beyond expectations, they find themselves in the middle of a power outage which only increases the tensions in the town where people are already being knocked off.  Trapped alongside the rest of the bitter residents in a lodge, a comical whodunnit suddenly appears from the blanket of snow and its footprints are abnormally big and hairy!

There’s a werewolf on the loose!

Featuring fun performances from George Basil, Sarah Burns, Michael Chernus, Catherine Curtin, Harvey Guillén, Rebecca Henderson, Cheyenne Jackson, and Michaela Watkins, Werewolves Within is a fun world to be immersed in.  It is irreverent, full of great music selections, and the characters are every bit as lopsided as they need to be in order to pull off this comedy and the horror - as both elements are handled with a bit of Edgar Wright sophistication.  The movie is a blast from start to finish and should even satisfy those gorehounds out there who are solely in it for the fear and the fur to begin flying.

FURR-ocisously FANGtastic, Werewolves Within will keep you on the edge of your seat when you aren't howling alongside its own madness.  The film is now on blu-ray thanks to iFC Films and RLJE Films.
