Spider-Man: Far From Home

Sony/Columbia's webslinger shot to the top of the weekend box office wresting the top spot from Pixar's Toy Story 4 which had held onto the number one slot for the last two weeks.

Spider-Man: Far From Home brought in $93.6 million which, when added to its Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday totals, amassed a whopping $185 million. This represents the largest six-day opening ever for a Tuesday release. The total also marks the first time a sequel has performed well against expectations in quite some time.

The weekend's other film making its debut was Ari Aster's horror follow-up to Hereditary, Midsommar which finished in sixth place with a $10 million bow. This also represents the largest opening by an indie film this year.

The aforementioned Toy Story 4 added another $34.3 million over the weekend which was enough to come in second place and bring its three-week total to over $306 million. {googleads}

Holding onto the third slot this weekend was the Danny Boyle comedy Yesterday which added another $10 million to bring its two-week total to just shy of $37 million. That was enough to beat out both the horror film Annabelle Comes Home which brought in $9.7 million and Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin which rounded out the top five and added another $7.6 million in its seventh week of release.

Following Midsommar's sixth place finish was the animated comedy film The Secret Life of Pets 2 which dropped two slots yet finished with $4.7 million over the holiday weekend. That total was enough to beat out Men in Black International which made $3.6 million and Avengers: Endgame which brought in $3. million to finish in ninth place.

Rounding out the top ten was the Elton John biopic Rocketman which fell one spot and added another $2.7 million to bring its six week total to $40 million.
