Box Office analysts' projections were shattered over the weekend as Jordan Peele's horror film Us more than doubled projections with a whopping $70.3 million take giving it the highest opening for an original horror film, and the highest opening for an original R-rated film. We're getting kind of obscure here but the film's weekend performance also represents the third best horror opening ever after 2017's It and last year's Halloween sequel.
Coming in second place with a 48% drop in its third week was the Marvel superhero actioner Captain Marvel which added $35 million to its total followed by the family-friendly animated film Wonder Park which brought in $9 million in its second week of release. {googleads}
Rounding out the top five were the teen-friendly romantic drama Five Feet Apart and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World which brought in $8.7 million and $6.5 million respectively.
Tyler Perry's Madea comedy A Madea Family Funeral continues to perform well in its fourth week of release by adding another $4.5 million to bring its total to nearly $66 million, while the Julianne Moore headlined drama Gloria Bell moved up eleven spots to come in seventh place with $1.8 million in box office receipts.
Eight place was taken by No Manches Frida 2 which brought in $1.7 million while The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part added $1.1 million to finish in ninth place over the weekend.
The top ten was rounded out by the cyberpunk action film Alita: Battle Angel which brought its grand total to more than $83 million with a $1 million take.
